85 octane vs 87?

    Took trip up to Salt Lake City from CA. Usually put in 87 octane. At the pump north of cedar city, an hour or so above Zion. I stopped at a Shell station that only had 85. I went across the street. Same thing. My research says at higher altitude this okay. The ECU should be able to compensate with timing maps. Maybe I'll mix 88 or higher in?

    I'm used to seeing 87, 89, 91.

    Old timers say high elevation with a carburetor use lower octane gasoline.

    Keep with the 87.

    My wife's 2000 Jeep TJ Wrangler using 85 per her dad as we all live at 7000', started cold like crap, MPGs were low. I ran a full tank of 87 and all the odd problems went away.

    No choice in UT. I may just add in 88 octane to even it out.

    I think it goes 85,88,95 here in this state.

    Then 88 will be fine as the manual states 87

    It’s becaise of the elevation difference. If you’re worried, just pay the dollar to fill up a tank on higher octane.

    With fuel injection, higher octane than manufacturer recommendation does not matter for higher elevation.

    It will make zero difference, the elevation makes it just as if you had 87 at a lower elevation.

    I ran 85 in my Tacoma while vacationing out west this summer while pulling a travel trailer. No issue. MPG was the same and didn't notice any difference in performance. I also notice that the pump said the 85 didn't contain ethanol but the 88 did.

    Higher octane doesn’t matter period because the engine isn’t tuned to take advantage of it. Not that 1 octane rating higher would matter anyways other than peace of mind, which is what I offered if he was worried :rolleyes:

    That's what I did when I was passing through Utah 6 months ago - just go with 88. Didn't even know that 85 existed anymore....thought 87 was the standard.

    Common in the Mountains. Shouldn't be a problem unless you are going down t sea level within 300 miles. If you can get pure 85 and then mix a gallon or two of e85...you will be back up north of 87 octane.

    We have 85 here at every station. I've logged a few thousand miles on fuelly with both 85 and 87 and notice a 1.5 mpg improvement overall with the 87.

    I can't feel any difference.

    Non-eth. Fuel when I can find it makes a big difference though. 3 mpg improvement and no HPFP whistle.

    I run 89 non ethanol and get 24-25 mpg
    With 87 e10 I get 22 mpg
    My butt dyno and calculator likes the 89 corn free pure gas :mudding:
