I know people say you should run 87 in the 3rd gen, and I did for about 20k. One time going up a steep grade getting stuck in traffic I needed to floor it and the truck fell on its face. It didn't sound like it was pinging but it had to have been. Ever since then I only run 91 top tier gas . they say it's placebo but I beg to differ. Before while driving on the freeway you have to go 80 mph or it would kind of bog. You couldn't drive 65....but since using the 91 it cruises like a normal car. Being that it has 11.1 compression it shouldn't be run on anything less than 93 but we don't have that here. It's got to be the Atkins cycle which allows you to drive the thing at 1000 rpm and not stall out. Its just a really strange engine for a truck. I think maybe the direct injection helps to keep cool enough to ..run 87. Maybe all the cheap gas previously ran through the engine built up some carbon. I used to think gas is gas it all comes from the same place.
Not anymore. There are more additives in the top tier gas. Over the life of the truck that cheap gas will eventually destroy the engine with carbon.

Where are you getting your 87 gas from? Try top tier regular gas. Anything over you're throwing your money away, look at your owners manual.

This document says 91 or higher, with that said, I’ve run 87 in mine for 5 years with no issues.

Hmm according to the owners manual which I just looked up (page 554) says 87 octane, 91 research octane or higher.

I think it’s just the terminology used, in the document I posted it says “Fuel Octane Rating 91 or higher”.

Higher octane ≠ more power (when stock). Watch any youtube video about it and educate yourself.

Before the supercharger I ran 85 with no problems at all, even going over 12k foot passes.

You may just have bad gas stations, as a rule I only try to go to busy shell gas stations as I know they’re getting fresh gas a lot more often than a lot of places. Also I get a discount at shell and they digitally save all my gas receipts for tax purposes. Just stick with busy gas stations that are well known and stay away from the small shacks and middle of nowhere and you should be fine with 87 no sense in wasting that money on premium this isn’t an Audi.

I used to think the same thing. Since my rig is so heavy, I wanted every little advantage I could get (thinking I would achieve slightly more power and better gas mileage using 91). I only used premium since I bought the truck new in Dec 19. Most everything I have been reading/watching says you won't gain anything by using premium in our trucks. I finally switched over to regular once prices started going up. After 10 or so tankfuls now, I haven't felt one iota difference in acceleration, don't experience any knocking, and gas mileage has remained exactly the same. I do use Chevron exclusively though. I'm now firmly on the regular team unless you are tuned/supercharged.

I have noticed a difference at low rpms when it’s hot outside between 87 and 91.

My theory is because the compression is so high, the engine will pull timing at lower rpm to avoid knock.

never noticed it other than when it’s 90+ degrees out though. High rpm’s didn’t notice a difference.

Same as my experience. 91’s obvious advantage is when going up the mountains. No pinging . It’s our ride and experience. Whatever anyone says it’s not even worth a grain of salt.

Been running shell or irving E10 87 for the past 2 years...truck runs the best on it. Tried E10 93, truck runs like crap, less power, and transmission hunts. From all the posts i read on this matter, these trucks have to be tuned differently from toyota or their very sensitive to different fuels across the country.

I have always been a 91 octane in my taco because I could feel it run better. Stock then OV 2.0 premium but now I run OTT tune with 87 and it runs and drives better than before.

I've tried 87, 89 , 91 and 93 during different times of the year to see if there's a difference. My early build 2016 truck runs best with 89.

    Oh look, another mod....
Bullshit. You don't have to drive 80MPH, you choose to.
