Ive have always run 87 octane in my v6 Tacoma. But recently ive been hearing some people recommending a bump to 89 octane instead for a boost in fuel efficency.
Has anyone tried this, and if so what were your results?

i would stay with 87 unless you have some performance mods on the truck....

Says somewhere in the manual that 87 is fine. Unless spending more money makes you feel better because the octane rating is higher, I'd stick with 87.

I had heard somewhere that toyota Tested and benchmarked the 5VZ on 93. I have a deckplate mod and more free flowing muffler and use 93 octane and get around 25-28 mpg freeway and about 17-20 city

Manual recommends 91. Says 87 minimum somewhere though

Yeah 91, my chilton book says something along the lines of only use 87 if a higher grade is not available, I've been running 93 as of late as Im about to get a lil snail lol

We (In Texas) can choose from 87, 89 and 93. Some places in downtown houston have 100, 110 and 150, although that stuff is like 10 to 15 dollars a gallon lol

That means that those numbers were achieved using 91 octane, not that it's required. Your 3.4l engine was designed to run on 87 and will function just fine on it. You're only required to run higher octane if you're running with forced induction.

While 87 is just fine, I do notice better mpgs with 93, not saying everyone will.

I work in the oil industry. When I bought my truck I only ran 93 (preferably no ethanol) for the first year. My boss was telling me about the process in how they get the certain classes of fuel. He was telling me in a nutshell. I was completely wasting my money unless I owned a Vette or a Mustang that I was receiving no benefits. I never actually tested that theory of mpg. I'm not sure if it was all in my head but I felt the car run slightly differentwhen I rn on 93.... probably all in my head. Taking a trip to La this Wednesday, Going to test that theory as I have to fill up twice. Interested to see the results

It's a never-ending debate that people will argue until they're blue in the face, despite what anyone with "evidence" one way or another says lol. I used to be one of those people. Now, I look at the whole '87 versus 89 versus 91' topic like I do religion; no matter what, you cannot disprove another person's experience or perspective. It is what it is.

I've heard tons of stories of mixing the gas and ethanol incorrectly. :stirthepot:

Newer high tech high compression engines can take greater advantage of these fuels but we are talking about an engine designed in the early 90s for a truck.

My owner manual reads 87 octane. 87 octane for me...to each his own.

It is a truck I am happy with my 15mpg when it gets that high of mileage

I have tried at different times because of stations running out the different grades if there is a difference it is so slight I never took notice.

Do a blind test have a friend fill your tank not telling you just what grade is in the tank.

Then you tell them just what one is in the tank based off the performance your seeing

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I use 87, don't see the point in spending more than I have to. Premium is for performance engines, my Mustang, for example sees nothing but premium but it demands it. The Taco doesn't, the Taco doesn't care what it drinks as long as it's gas! I've tried all grades of gas in it, no change in fuel economy at all.
