Haha, yeah we did pretty much the perfect intro to outdoor climbing stuff and worked our way up, so it would've been a good start for you. Next time!

Photoooooo DUMP! Ish. Finally got around to editing photos from months ago...

    Anza Borrego, March 11, 2017:

Went for a day trip to see Swainson's Hawks during their migration through Borrego Springs and the wildflower bloom from all of the storms during the winter. The wildflowers were insane and it was green everywhere, which was mind-blowing for the desert, but the Swainson's Hawks were only just beginning so we only saw a handful.

Started at the Swainson's Hawk migration count point in borrego springs and checked out the wildflowers on the side of the road while we waited

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

Suddenly had two hawks fly right over us!

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

    Then back to the flowers...

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

    The tiniest of flowers!

We gave up on the hawk migration and headed south to Borrego Sink, which we had never visited before. Incredibly bizarre, alien world out there with the salt deposits!

    Pollinatin' with our shoes...

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

    Super green

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

Still a touch of snow up in the mountains!

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

Then out Buttes Wash over by The Slot and Ocotillo Wells

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

Constantly blown away by the greenery! And this was weird with the smoke trees all dried out but the rest of the area green. Not sure what was going on with that beyond guesses.

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

Awesome day trip out there with the family!

Ten days later, we went back out to look for more Swainson's Hawks. This time we made a camping trip out of it on a Monday night, which was awesome!

Still incredibly green overlooking Borrego Springs

My parents and I headed up into Rockhouse Canyon again and camped in Butler Canyon, the side-road off of Rockhouse. We were nervous about finding a camp site and got to an actual trail obstacle, so we walked out ahead and there were a couple of great spots, so we pushed ahead. Unfortunately there wasn't anything sheltered from the wind, but that was true for everywhere... it sucked! My parents ended up squishing in the back of my mom's truck with the dog because the tent setup wasn't working out.

Always fun to slip while spotting! :p

The flower fields were even better in the morning with perfect lighting and some nice textured clouds in the sky

    And we found them!

[IMG]Swainsons Hawk by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

[IMG]Swainsons Hawk by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

Only had a dozen or two fly overhead at the flower field but in the distance was a kettle with a couple dozen more. Not the hundreds or thousands that were reported in other days but still pretty cool! These hawks were on their way from Argentina up to the grasslands in North America from Northern California up into Canada.

After the Swainson's Hawks passed by, we headed over to the desert garden at the start of Coyote Canyon to check out more wildflowers.

    Lots of cacti

    Desert Iguana!

[IMG]Desert Garden by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

The most massive barrel cactus I've ever seen. Thing was about 4' tall and 2' wide. The desert garden path had a branch out to it and a little ring around it where people had been going for years.

And that was the end of that trip! I was contemplating spending another night farther south because I had work out in Seeley, near El Centro the next morning and I needed to be there at 6am, but the wind was so bad I gave up on that. It was nice to go home anyways, even though the 3:45am wake up call sucked!

Then in the end of April my sister was in town so we went back out to Anza Borrego for a day trip with the family. First stop was Font's Point, which is always stunning.

Still a few flowers around, though not nearly as green as six weeks earlier. It was amazing how quickly it went!

Then we went down to the mud caves but I left the camera in the truck to try and spare it from the dust. That was a mistake! We ended up popping out in the badlands up above the mud cave arroyo, which was it's own surreal landscape of lumpy hills. Next time!

We split for the evening and I headed south to the Yuha Desert. It was a perfect windless night, so much nicer than the last Anza trip!

I ended up camping at the Shell Beds camp because it was close to my site but a bit farther away from I-8 than the closest camping area. There was even a little bit of a berm to block any potential wind, which was perfect.

The 5am wake-up call meant I could enjoy the sunrise while eating breakfast and packing up.

And the lesser nighthawks flying around in the dawn light were an extra treat!

That was the perfect shake-down run because just a few days later we headed out on the trip to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and southwestern Utah with @at_olw! Those photos are coming...

I forgot about my Valley of the Moon trip, though. Those pics were on my other camera, so I'll have to look through those sometime. Spent 4 days out there on a spectacular climbing trip.

Picture time! Finally finished up my photos from the North Rim/SW UT trip back in April/May.

Gonna spread them out until the next page...

We did our standard and met in Mojave for the first night. Amazingly we accidentally timed it just about perfectly and both arrived in Barstow to gas up at about the same time!

Spent the night at Afton canyon.

Headed up towards the Fire Wave area. Accidentally turned off a turn too soon but had this lovely spot all to ourselves for lunch.
