LOL just got through those photos. So many new photos to get through from another Ecuador trip and testing a canon 7D mkii and 5D mkiv as potential upgrades.

Soooo back in September... @at_olw and I went on a Yosemite/Sierra Nevada trip for a three-day weekend.

Plan was to meet up in Alabama Hills for the first night. We both got on the road later in the evening and got to Alabama Hills at around midnight, but we still got a pretty awesome spot.

The views the next morning were phenomenal!

We had a lazy morning after the late arrival but headed up to Bishop for supplies and to get information on the wildfire situation. The plan was to climb and we didn't want to climb in smoke, so we were nervous that we would get shut out of our primary goal. The smoke websites said it would be relatively clear in the Tuolomne area until the afternoon, so we decided to risk it.

There wasn't much time left in the day when we got up there so we only got in a couple of easy short crack climbs, but they were still quite fun and great for getting back into it.

    Nice views from the climbs!

Camped out by Mono Lake that night. Nice clear skies, though it did cloud up a bit later in the evening.

Woke up to these noise-makers screaming at each other... Freaking Ospreys!

The next day we headed back into Tuolomne to climb a multi-pitch climb on Lembert Dome. Such a fun route with fantastic views from the top!

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

We were pretty wiped and didn't have any ambition to do more climbs in the park so we made our way south and went to Sand Canyon hoping to find a good campsite for the night. It ended up being an amazing trail!

The biggest obstacle on the beginning of the trail was an area of erosion behind a pipe...

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

We worked our way up into the mountains and got our first glimpses of the amazing views to come

The end of the trail had the most amazing campsite. "Who told you about this place?!" - The only words spoken to us by a pair of wheelers that were hoping to camp there. :p

The next morning had even better views with the mountains in view!

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

And our winter migrant yellow-rumped warblers were there on their way south.

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

We started getting them in San Diego a few weeks later. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has been creating these awesome migration maps for a few species that use people's submissions of bird observations throughout the year and you can see how the birds move based on when people report seeing them. This one is of a Savannah Sparrow but you can see how they are only in the southern states during the winter with the exception of the resident populations here in southern California. Yellow-rumps are similar in that they are mainly here in southern California only in the winter and they breed in the north.

There weren't too many other birds around with the cold morning but the mountain views were beyond what I expected.

The trail out went down through that canyon. It was funny to be able to see both our route and the paved road going up to Rock Creek Lake just on the other side of another canyon to the west.

    Thanks!

Haha, yeah you do! I forgot about that "how hard can it be" comment of yours... next time we're headed out in the sierras or out to JTree or down here in San Diego we'll have to go do something. Or that place we went to in Utah was pretty sweet, too. Prophecy wall, I think.

Nah, we wanted to get to camp before dark for once, and we got on the trail at like 2pm or so so we just didn't have time. Next time!

Timmy was supposed to come out for a trip to JTree a couple weeks ago but mother nature had other plans for you all... I hope everything's going okay for you in the recovery! We'll do a make-up trip sometime.

And the 5d was nice, too. I haven't figured out if it's worth the extra dough, though. I'm just getting to photos from my most recent Ecuador trip and we'll see if I'm annoyed by the dark conditions again...

I thought I would be sad to lose the crop factor, but so far I don't notice a difference. These two hawks were performing aerial courtship displays about 1/4 mile off and it still came out decently.

Who knows... next time I have 3k that I don't know what to do with I'll put it towards the 5d, I think. I don't see a reason to go to the 7d first.

You can’t go wrong with the 7d or 5d. Your daylight shots are great. Night or dark will be better but you’re right, hard to justify the extra.
