Keep in mind. You'll want to ship the truck. You won't want to drive through central America. Most likely anyways.

Most people say going to SA is a 15-40k dollar trip depending on how long you wanna go

I know driving will make it worse, but I'm a major minimalist traveler and spend very little (when I fly places) so here's to hoping this one can be doable.

Also, just have an itch to scratch (this probably won't happen and I'll just fly into Peru ha).

If you get a locker, do it right and get an ARB.

Right now with my stock 4.10 and the 11.9% larger diameter tires my new gear ratio is only 5.70 ish.

If I go to the 4.56s I'll be at something more like 5.10 with the tires

4.88s would be around 5.45 final gear ratio.

I'm at a bit of a loss which I should do ha.

But yes, IF I do decide for the lockers the selectable ARB and Air Compressor and ability to air down and back up would be the best case. More worried about my math on the gears for now, if it's even correct.

I'm trying to figure out what percentage my speedo will be off with each and choose something between stock and what I have now. I love the low rpms on the highway currently. It's just a real dog on hills/in wind/if I sneeze.

Remains to be seen. Plenty of folks have contacted me saying they want it, some for sure, some say they're pretty sure, etc. No one has paid up or arranged pick up yet. So when winter hits I'll either build this up further since I have a DD now or converge both vehicles into another project I have in mind. We shall see.

Right now, just brainstorming the next logical steps on this build in case it doesn't sell. If it does, that's fine too. I plan on traveling a lot this year anyway so either way both vehicles will just be sitting at home haha.

    Lots...see build
I know pretty much everything is different between our drive trains, but now that I've gone up to 33s I'm longing for the previous ratio of 31s with the stock 4.56 gears. I think I'll eventually go with 4.88s, but I think you have 31s, right? I think the 4.56s would be a good fit for you, but iirc your speedo was reading high, which would get worse with anything lower...right?

Lower gear ratio will correct my speedo some. It's 12% high right now due to taller tires.

    265/75s are 31.65" tall. Stock was 28.3"

I love getting 20+ mpg on the highway, may go with the most minimal gear change and call it good. At that point tempting to just deal with it, but max speeds across country are no bueno.

    I'll put it this way..

If you keep it and add a RTT and rear bumper. Your adding weight.

Regearing will be the best way to cope with the weight by far. Especially for the little 22re. And espeically if you're actually going to put a RTT on top of the shell. The drag will kill most of your hopes of going faster then 70mph on flat ground id bet.

The motor will putter along at higher RPMs no problem. My 86 had the horrible 4sp auto in it and was at 3000-4000 all day on the highway...i say 3000-4000 because the tac in the truck was so inaccurate the needle kinda just wiggled around lower or higher...lol

    Fun first toyota though.

Was just checking your build thread.. nice job...!! love the ol'single cabs..

Ive spent alot of time in central and mostly s. america... Last i checked that bit of land between Panama and Colombia , the Darien gap, is not doable except maybe on foot if youre truly suicidal... most fly over or if with a vehicle load onto a boat/ferry heading that way... SA has definitely gotten more expensive over the years but if youre a smart minimalist you can still do it on the cheap... if i were you though id just fly down and bus it... anyway, good luck with the trip as you will most definitely have a great time.. and if you have any questions feel free to pm me... always happy to help a fellow traveller...

Just tore apart the engine today. Seem to have a dead cylinder.

I was 3/1, India Co, Weapons Plt, from 2007-2011.
