Hey all, just had a question for anyone in the know. I have a 95 tacoma 2.7 and have been researching how to adjust timing and have been finding conflicting info. First off, the only way to adjust timing is by taking off the distributor and repositioning the gear and reinserting it. Second, i have read that if the gears out of place there is a sensor in the dist. That shuts the truck down if it's not in the right position. Third, if the engine runs perfect then wouldn't it be in correct timing since you cant really fine tune it? Also the manual calls for an obd2 scanner to be attached while reading the timing light/marks, anyone know why this is necessary? Any input would be great! Thanks

All OBD2 cars are required to have timing controlled by the computer. You can not adjust the timing, but you can hook up a timing light to check that it's correct. There are still timing marks on the crank pulley and timing chain cover.

If you insert the distributor into the head incorrectly and the gears aren't aligned correctly the timing will probably be off enough that the engine runs poorly if at all.

Thanks DrZ. I just rebuilt the motor so I guess I better get a scanner and timing light and make sure everything is in spec.
before I put some miles on it.
