You can have a simple tube bumper made for a few hundred all over AZ and Cali from even members on here.

Chopping up the stock bumper for clearance is pretty unnecessary unless you are seriously having scraping issues when wheeling, wouldn't a lift fix this too?

Plus it forces you to relocate the turn signals, additional work.

I give credit that you did a DIY hack the bumper mod but it seems like time and energy would have been better spent on other ends of the root problem, tire clearance.

I wheeled with my stock front bumper in full form for years and never had an issue.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
I wheel with 3.25in lift in front and still scrape that plastic crap on rocks. It protects basically nothing and the turn signal relocate is one of the most common mods done anyway. Even if you get a tube bumper your gonna have to relocate the signals. Plus, if your goal is really to protect you'd probably get a plate or hybrid bumper, we mostly want the clearance at this point.

That 95-97 model with just the center section remaining is really spiffy looking. I like that a lot and may have to do this until I can afford a plate bumper.

I drive on the street 98% of the time but plan on more future modding, time/$. Also, I left the center front section of plastic on the bumper until I installed my intercooler. I suggest just take it all off while your there. It looks better without anything there at all imo.

Use a Dremel tool with a diamond cutting disc. Melts it like butter. Or a jig or Sawzall but they won't cut as accurate. You could also use a cordless drill with some kind of cutting bit in it.

Another cheap method to cut the plastic is just a utility knife, you can heat up the blade with a lighter and it will cut really easy. Maybe not the best option for longer cuts but if you don't have any of the tools mentioned above it is a cheap alternative.

I loved everything about my complete 97 stock front end. Still my favorite front end of the 1st gens.

I'm working towards that too... I destroyed my plastic on the rocks so this is a interim fix :)

This is like the modification done to older Dodge cars, like my Rampage. People tuck the rear bumpers in by cutting 2" out and re-welding the bumper supports. Might not be safer, but the cars are driven so infrequently it's negotiable. Makes the car look better too, FWIW.
