I would like to separate the black, painted, shifter shaft from the unpainted stub shaft. There is some sort of flexible joint. The FSM is no help.

How does one get them apart?

    Thanks,

It's less Tacoma and more mod
It's rubber that's been vulcanized to the metal shaft, you have to light it on fire and burn it out. It's supposed to be permanent.

Sorry to say, that's what I thought.

But...I have a long Hx of lighting stuff on fire which was supposed to be permanent.

Seems like a dumb design, as there are replaceable parts which can only be replaced by splitting the shafts.

    Thanks, Speedy.

No worries, you can melt em apart and then get a tube of 3M Window Weld to put em back together. It's available at oreillys and it's basically fast curing polyurethane in a tube.

OK. Here is what I found. YRMV.

Put the propane torch to the unpainted stub shaft...right where it goes into the painted shaft...for all of about a minute.

I did not burn out the rubber-assembly-thingy. I melted whatever whitish glue they used to attach the stub shaft into the the rubber-thing. And, they just came apart.

Really...about a minute of heat. Would be interesting to know why Toyota thought they needed the rubber thing. I have never known any other shifters with such a feature.

I'll glue it back together with whatever glue I have on hand.
