Hi everyone! I've owned a 5-speed 96 Tacoma LX with the 2.4L engine and RWD for about 6 months. In that time I've gotten a new brake master cylinder, new water pump, thermostat, battery connections, valve covers (to fix a leak), and a radiator. I've been vigilant so far, until a few days back.

An auto shop replaced my radiator a month ago. However, my coolant leaked externally from a cracked hose. The engine overheated a few days ago, and a compression test indicates that there's coolant in my oil.

My question is, how do I determine whether to replace the head gasket, to try and rebuild the engine, or to purchase a new (used) engine?

It is misfiring badly. On top of having overheated, rain may have warped the engine (as it was hot when the potential water damage happened), shorted out the spark plugs, maybe even messed up the ignition coils.

    Thanks for reading, folks.

Edit: It's worth mentioning I am in the Charleston, SC area
