Guys got a question for you. I have a 96 Tacoma with an automatic transmission, I have the motor and transmission out. The shifter assembly was already removed when I got the truck. Why won’t the assembly go out of park? Am I missing something here? Surely doesn’t need power to work does it?

Are you speaking of the detent bar on the side of the transmission ? if yes , you should be able to move that detent lever by hand through all the gear ranges .
If you are talking about the shifter inside the truck ? as long as the key is in the run position , it should move out of park through all the gear ranges as there is no transmission there right now

I have the shifter assembly on my work bench at the moment. I can’t get it out of park. Is there a rebuild kit for this? I depress the button on top of the shifter I see a spring underneath moving down. Not sure what I’m missing here doesn’t look that complicated but it’s got me stumped!

Theres also a slot for a flat head screwdriver that allows you to manually "unlock" the shifter. This let's you move through the shift positions freely. Not sure if this help, but good luck man!
