Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
I have a female friend State Trooper .

She loves to play the clueless Bimbo Men are always taking advantage trying to up sale work.

I have no idea what your being quoted for . It might be all new parts some shops will quote a worse case price.

Unless your Truck sounds like a train stopping you should have time to hunt up your regular mechanic.

    Good Luck!

i dont see anything about grease or seals on his list...just repacking maybe, but i would replace the seals while i was in there...375 labor for all of that doesnt sound terrible to me

Don't worry about it- This thread would have been different if the original questions where left to be answered on your time and other users didn't jump to conclusions.

As pointed out, I incorrectly posted a video of a 2nd gen, but for research purposes, the process should be the same for your truck as the diagrams point to a similar setup, and all I can hope is that it gives you enough information to ask the mechanic the right follow up questions.

For what it's worth, I don't think your mechanic is trying to swindle you. If you had a 6-lug, then I would agree that price is too high. There's a lot about your vehicle we don't know, that a mechanic might take into consideration during a diagnostic / quote which aren't easily communicated over the internet. Amount of rust on things, etc... However, if you really feel like they might be wrong, you should get a second opinion (TW doesn't count) and reassess.

The labor may be on the high side, but with the economy the way it is today, I guess it's feasible.

The upside in my opinion is that the part numbers listed appear be OEM or at least OEM quality, and not just crappy low end aftermarket bits marked up to make them sound quality.

I would suggest checking with a few other shops to get a good feel for how each shop stacks up to one another.

When I used to work in a service industry (not auto related), there was often not a way to charge a customer for something like "grease". Logically, the shop buys grease in bulk, the tech grabs a finger full and smashes it into the bearing, and moves on. For a multitude of reasons those types of charges get rolled into the other charges. We used to charge for "Misc Materials", but that was really just a bucket / cover fee for items which were bought in a large quantity and usage was small and spread across multiple jobs.

Are you going to apologize for this? You failed to do your research and accused me of "not knowing what I am saying", when in fact, the whole hub had to come off, and the wheel bearings (at a minimum) did need repacking. You even subsequently admitted to having to do this process on a Trooper, so you should have known better. Maybe next time cool your jets and get all the info before you blast away. You certainly didn't help the OP make an informed decision, and truly muddled up this thread into an attempted "Nano909 knows better" disaster.

Cant believe you all cant figure it out.....

If you fix something......and dont fix the whole situation... and problems occur........you get to go back and do it again for free.....

Half time people think pads are going out.....they are not....the bearings are going.......
Mechanics that eat know this......so a smart one will insist on doing the whole thing to cover his ass.....

If there are groves in the rotor.....he by law cannot just repad and send back out on the road.....

Actually he can object to anything....

5 lugs have weak ass bearings......too bad......their sheilds are not sealed....only axle seal.....

6 lugs dont have this problem but cost 6 times as much and require special tools/ knowledge to replace.....but are sealed and last much much longer......definite mechanical advantage to these..

My 5 lug gets its repacked everyother year......
takes like 20 min a side if you unbolt and slide hub from rotor and leave rotor hanging stuck in the calipher.....easy peasy....

If you get that 30mm bolt too loose bearings fail.....if you get too tight....they fail in double time.....

I agree- The shop and mechanic put their ass on the line. Good shops want go the extra mile and do the job right. Now, knowing more about the 5 lug setup, I think the price is fair.

Are you still crying about that? You still didn't tell me why the mechanic can't do it in under an hour. I'll wait.
