Hello all had this problem could not figure out why? I replaced air filter, fuel filter, checked the compression, sprayed carb cleaner all over engine, bottle sea foam 1/2 in gas 1/2 in oil (oil must be changed 500 miles after putting sea foam in oil) After all this problem remains, considered plugged cat, and finally someone posted an awesome video on youtube claiming he had fixed his car with identical symptoms. Mind you many people did mention possibly the MAF sensor nothing more. Check this out, The video shows the removal of the MAF sensor two little screws. Be careful taking off and putting back on. Upon inspecting the sensor i could see a so tiny layer of accumulated fine black dust. My immeadiate thought was ah this wont fix it, because such a tiny amount of debri was there. Spray the crap out of the tiny little wire with a resistor looking deal in the center with MAP sensor spray from NAPA let dry reassemble. My truck is fixed OH THANKS BE TO GOD ALL THIS GLORY IS YOURS FATHER!

My 96 2.4 had the same issues, but finally set a code for too rich. I sprayed the maf off and reinstalled. Once you reach the too rich code you will need to disconnect the battery to reset the fuel tables. If you don't you will have to wait for them to trim themselves.
