Hmmm that's pretty interesting. But I don't know how that would make sense. How could they tell if I put a 1995 motor in my truck and never said anything about doing a engine swap? I know that's not the same as swapping a ls. But I don't see why that would really matter

It has to do with what emissions equipment was required at the time of production of your truck. So say your truck is a 1997 and it uses OBD, if you install a motor from 1990 there will be no way to make ODB (check engine light) work. They will know because the chances of you having a working CEL is pretty much zero, so when you take your truck for emissions they will have to "sniff" instead of checking the engine light because the vehicle has been modified. During the "sniff" testing they are required to do a visual check to make sure that ALL standard emissions equipment that came with the truck is still present, if model year of the motor is older than the chassis its an automatic fail in AZ

But did those cars have the engines they were supposed to have? An LS motor is nowhere near anything that came factory from Toyota lol

Thats different then, a barracuda never had OBD. And the motor was probably newer than the car. The issue is if you put an older motor in

Edit: I was just thinking I do fleets, not personal stuff. So that may be different

^Just an FYI I emailed my emissions instructor and asked to clarify, its not just fleets. In AZ you cannot register a vehicle that has a motor from a previous model year, ALL engines must be replaced with same model year or newer, no exceptions
