Hey, my name is Riley, I have a 1998 Tacoma Extended cab that I bought wrecked. It hit a deer. I got the broken radiator and fan off and tried to start it for the first time. I hooked up the jumper cables to the dead battery and it started making a buzzing noise in the cab. The only way I can get the noise to stop is to turn the key to on. I tried the starter with no response. Just wondering if anyone has any idea what I need to check.

Track down a Copy of the Factory Service Manual for the year tacoma you own!!

Start with the Starting circuit work through one thing at a time.

I have personally experienced a buzzing noise from "low quality" big box parts store new starter made in China when the ignition was turned off after attempting to to start the car. So I had to disconnect the battery to get the noise to stop. It did however turn over the car to start it. I couldn't hear the noise while the engine was running.

The noise started within an hour of installing the new starter so it was easy to make the connection with the noise.

Aside from that, if you cannot put your fingers on the part that is buzzing, and are about to abandon all hope, I have isolated a troubled electrical component by removing fuses until I find the troubled component.

Was your truck put into service in one of the "Gulf States Toyota" states that are Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas? You might be experiencing a problem with an aftermarket alarm system installed by the distributor or a dealer. If the alarm system was damaged during the wreck, the truck might be immobilized. The buzz may be coming from some "malfunctioning" part of the alarm system.

I started having trouble with the alarm system randomly immobilizing my 99 model until I had it removed.

I would take a quick look at the fuses to make sure they are good. As far as as the buzzing, I’m not sure. Could possibly be a relay. I have had them make noise before.

Try to find out what area of the cab it is coming from and see if you can describe what you find or post up a picture of what is making the noise.

buzzing like that is usually an indication of under voltage. The dead battery is acting like a "sponge" and absorbing all the current supplied by what ever the jumper cables are attached to. Put a known good battery in the Tacoma and the buzzing should stop. The starting circuit on your 98 is a simple circuit and is relativley easy to diagnose.

Glamisman is right. I remember having a low voltage issue when I heard that buzzing before. Slap a good battery in there and see what happens.

Haven't updated the forum in a while. The electrical "problem" was just an unconnected ground wire. Have the truck pretty much finished though.20191209_215102.jpg

Sorry for the late response, I haven't checked the forum for a while. The deer was found here in Elko Nevada.

    Tasteful modifications :)
No but you sure as hell could pay someone to fab one up for you if you have anyone around you that does those sort of jobs. Depending on the work they do and how complicated it is it’d probably run you around 300-600$ is my best guess

I was just saying that the designs are very similar. I made some tweaks to mine to improve utility, but they’re otherwise “same-same, but different”.

And when did you guys meet up for that pic?

    Lol continuing our PM

Badass if you tweaked and already good looking tiregate. I'm jealous of the flat surface next to the tire, I could use that on mine....
