Pretty sure that would never be California BAR legal, would need to be a Toyota v8. Still would be a badass trail rig Blake!

I think you are right. With a chevy engine in there it might be hard...or impossible. But it is a bad ass rig for sure.

    LOL

I think you will need a little more than that for a functional trail rig :D

No way! That's just for the truck itself. I'll spend plennnttyyy more on mods. My buddy bought this 4Runner for $1200 and it's solid. I'm thinking something along these lines.

    Ahhhh....got you.

I thought you were talking about a SASed rig with all the typical rock crawling bling.

Beware of those "cheap" trail rigs. Your friend may have been lucky, but often times those rigs can be a nightmare with more broken shit to fix than it's worth :D

My plan is to do plenty of research on which years to look for, be patient, and shoot for something bone stock, preferably old person owned! That way I know it was taken care of. After selling my truck I just miss modding and wheeling so much.

Did you have Andrew (LetzRoll) do everything for the conversion? I need to start planning for adding Hydro Assist to my Ferd....

Yup...Andrew's da man. They know their shit there. After he installed my hydro assist, with HEAVY ass 40"s my steering feels smoother and easier than when I had IFS and 33"s  Hydro assist is really worth every penny....and certainly a must if you go 37" and up with the tires.

Sweet. Yeah he did the rear axle swap on my truck a few years ago. I'm only running 35's right now, but it's a pig trying to steer. also running an IFS Toyota Steering box from a 1st gen 4runner..

You gonna love it. The ram size makes a big difference in the feel of the steering; they'll help you choose the right one based on your intended use and tire size. Also, the steering pump is a big deal. I would upgrade that as well.

My IFS steering box is from an early 90s toyota pickup truck

Awesome, thanks man. I'll be giving them a visit when the time comes.

since it's a DD currently, i'll probably stick to 35s until I snag a new DD. I'll probably do 37s after that, but not planning on going bigger than that. I have a D44 in the front with chromoly axle shafts, 5.13 gears, locked, etc and a ford 8.8 in the rear with chromoly axle shafts, 5.13 and locked as well.

I don't recall off the top of my head what's in there for a steering pump, but I will take a look for sure!

didn't know it had been posted on CL, LOL

I don't think the price is crazy at all.

Man, we are talking about buying a truck, doing an engine swap [rebuilding the whole thing doing it right and the amount of custom fabrication to make it fit], custom auto tranny, links front/rear with coilovers on all corners, sway bars, internal cage, fuel cell, new paint, custom exhaust, racing seats with harness, custom gauge cluster, etc.

If you could do all of that for less than the asking price, your rig would have links with coilovers front and rear, a V8 in it, etc. :luvya: :D

Seriously, it might not be worth it to you. But it will be worth it to somebody that just wants to turn the key and go. I would have bought it.

You have a sweet rig in there! You got the axles built, gears, lockers and all of that stuff already. It seems like the only thing missing is the steering.

If you plan to upgrade to 37"s in the future, I would certainly consider getting a bigger PS pump with more flow than whatever you have in there now especially if its a stock one. I did and have no regrets.

When you do hydro assist, if you do it right from the start, the first thing coming out of your mouth will be...."why didn't I do this sooner"!!

$20k is a lot of cash to lay out at once on a rig that is totally custom built by somebody that may or may not have gotten it all right. The interior isn't mint, it's not geared super low, and it's not on bling axles. Lock right in front and a Grizzly in back, if I'm going to lay out 20k, I want dual ARB's, 60's, Atlas and chromolly everything.

Second problem is that the buyer has to be a die hard third gen pickup guy that has $20k cash burning a hole in his pocket. No bank would touch it and mini truck guys are famously cheap so that's a bad combination for somebody trying to sell a rig like that at the price point he is asking.

Not saying you could build it for less, but selling it is a whole different story than building.

Agree with Snowy. But to each their own. Check out rockcrawling classifieds on facebook. Average toyotas with same thing is going for 10-12 with a straight body, one tons and atleast 37s. Not so great body and smaller axles, 8 ish if there lucky. Maybe a little more.

And I think if your patient and plan out a build you could build a toyota on tons, duals, v8 and 37s for something near that. Depending on the cost of the initial vehicle.l but you only really need a body and frame at the point. Of course doing your own fab work though.

Hmmm, people talking about money, think I'll stay away from this one. Though I will say that 3rd gen x cabs are imo one of the best bodies Toyota has ever done.

I thought you hated 1 ton axles with all the axle bling :luvya:

There is a cult of die hard toyota fans out there that pay big money for toyota stuff and rigs. The right buyer will show.

Also, the gearing is plenty low for V8/auto combo. No need to go super-mega-low with it. That's mostly for those of us with anemic small engines that have little torque.

About the interior...that's a matter of personal preference. I happen to like it a lot. It has a custom seats, harness, custom gauge cluster, etc. That's all I would want in a custom trail rig.

But you have a good point about buying custom rigs blindly. I would buy this one 'cause I have seen it and have been on wheeling trips with it. I know what it does and how it was built. The builder got it right without a doubt.

Not even close (the last paragraph in your reply)....well, at least not with the engine swap and custom built auto tranny added to the mix.

Guys, if it was as easy and cheap as you make it sound, wouldn't our rigs have links front/rear, coilovers, V8 swaps, etc, fuel cells, etc?

Again, the asking price might not be worth it to you; but it will to somebody else out there.
