Just blew a head gasket on my '98 regular cab 4x4 tacoma. The vehicle only has ~140K so I'm going to swap engines and try to resurrect her. The original engine is a, I think, 2.4L, 4-cylinder. Can I replace this with anything bigger? Like a V6? I understand the clutch and exhaust would also need to change but does anyone know if this is possible? Thank you!

Original engine is a 2.7 which came on 4WD and Pre-Runners, 2.4's only came on 2WDs. However, from 1995.5 -1997 you could get a regular cab tacoma with a factory equipped 3.4L V6 ( these are pretty rare). So, you "could possibly" retro fit a V6 into your truck.

Thanks so much! So helpful. Sounds like I should just stick to the 2.7L 4-cylinder. Seems like a safer, more cost-effective, option.
