98 Tacoma 2.7 won't crank over after it heated up.

I have read some similar topics on this AND my problem is not the same as the ones that I have read.

I have replaced the starter and the ignition switch.

My truck runs great. My problem is that my truck won't crank over after I have driven a few miles, its heats up and I have shut it off. After coming back out of a store or the like I get nothing. All power, dashboard lights and everything electrical works but the engine won't crank. 15 minutes or so later after it has cooled down I turn the key it turns over and the truck starts right up.

I started by replacing the starter solenoid. That didn't resolve the issue. I bought a new OEM starter and installed it with a new solenoid. That didn't work. It still won't crank over after it is heated up and shut off.

This happens very consistently in the summer which leads me to the notion that it may be something of a relay problem. It does not happen much in the winter months

I am out of ideas. It's not fuel related, battery related.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If I am understanding you correctly the ECTS can prevent my Tacoma from cranking until the temperature has cooled a bit?

It's been a while and have not addressed this issue. I am guess that the process of replacing this engine coolant temperature sensor is not an easy job.

Is the location of this sensor at the back of the motor by the fire wall?

Is there a how to for a do-it your selfer?

I am willing to try but I really don't know the correct procedure.

its by the radiator. go to your local pep boys and go their book section. look at the model of your truck and go to the glossary and you should find the exact location. you can buy the book but i think flipping through a few pages should give you an idea of how to remove it. its pretty simple.

kind of ghetto doing it that way but the pep boys workers dont really care lol. I sat at a pep boys one morning with a coffee and my cell phone for 2 hours reading and taking pictures.

 

Fast forward to 2017. I still have not resolved my issue. Now the truck won't crank at all when I turn the key. Replaced starter, Starter relay, Ignition switch, temperature control sensor, checked all the fuses. The truck will start by removing the cover to the starter relay, turning the ignition key to the on position and manually pushing the points together on the starter relay, Which leads me to believe that the relay is not getting power from the ignition. But I for the life of me can't find the problem.

 

The sensors won't prevent the engine from cranking. Those people didn't read or understand that the starter is not cranking.

Sounds like you are going to have to break out a voltmeter and check where you have power. If you don't get power to the relay (the solenoid contact of the relay) when key is in the start position, then you work your way to the ignition switch and wires. If the relay gets power, but no crank, then check the wiring going to the starter and the starter.

 

I've got to hand it to you for not rolling that truck off a cliff and welcome back!
