The other day I went to start my truck and the brake petal went to the floor & it wouldn't shift into gear...brake line rusted...leak!!!...replaced brake lines and purged...engine started great... brake pedal felt good...shifter shifted into gear...seemed back to normal...
a few days later...turned key and no start...just a click...& shifter wont move into any gear...brake pedal hard...
checked battery charge - good - starter bad?
last year I rebuilt the starter...replaced contacts but didn't replace solenoid plunger...it looked good? connections to starter look good...
Why won't it shift into gear? neutral safety switch? something with braking system?
Im beyond frustrated...I'm not a mechanic...but i'm mechanical...lol...I like to do my own work because I know I will take the time to do it right...just can't figure this one out...

you can stick a piece of metal/hard plastic in the slot above the P position on the shifter. this will allow you to take it out of Park and put it in Neutral to test.

found this for a T4R but same thing. you can see where the slot is on the plastic above the Park position.

actually I bought bushings a while ago but haven't put them in yet so I'll be using this too :)

One click...battery terminals clean & tight...i can hear starter solenoid plunger "plunging" when I turn key in ignition...its just strange it will not allow me to shift it into any gear without popping off the cap you mentioned...normally with foot on brake pedal & ignition turned... the shifter will move into any gear...i feel like it has to do with the brake line failure? Like something locked?

Has the battery been load tested ?
    I'm not talking voltage measured.

could be a fuse if pressing the brake pedal does not engage the Park release?

Update: I got it started (bad ground)...however it still will not come out of park...im thinking it may be the shift solenoid? When I got it started the E light came on...then I disconnected the neg. terminal to repair it...& E light is gone...for now...
