Have a 98 tacoma 270k miles. My battery light came on yesterday but I didn't think anything about it since my check engine and break lights stay on. Anyway it ran and started fine two days in a row then went to crank it this afternoon and battery was dead. Looked under the hood and smaller cable connector to positive battery terminal was broke in half. I shaved back the insulation and pinched the cable to the terminal to make contact. Then jumped the battery because I had an appt to make. Made it about two miles down the road then started losing power then it died.

It seems I have a bad alternator and I've never replaced the original but it seems like a weird coincidence that the alternator went bad when the cable broke. It was dark but all the fuses looked okay. Would a cable coming loose cause an alternator fuse to blow or is it just a coincidence? Thanks in advance.

I went through this same issue, did you do any work involving other electrical items? Check the cable that comes up the outside of the fusebox from the the large loom that includes the main B+ cable. This is the B+ main cable to the fuse box. I had this loose, and it caused the cable to arc and burn.

Get the wiring diagram out of the FSM. That light comes on only in specific instances. You can trace what the issue is.
