I have a 98 tacoma with a blown motor, 2.7l coil pack type motor. What do I modify to install a 2.7l distributor type? Both are the 3rz specification the only difference I can see is the distributor cap on the new motor. Can I get away with the same ecu and if so what do I need to modify on the wiring harness? As I have searched the internet its a common question but no direct answer as to how to make it work. It looks like the camshaft positioning sensor is the only thing that I would lose, do I need it or how can I install it?

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
The only way to know for sure is sit down look at the Toyota Electrical Wiring Diagrams from the vehicles both engines came from and compare wire by wire.

That is why you will never get a answer to many variables in the mix.

The earlier engine versions with the distributor have the cam position sensor built into the distributor. I'm not sure if your current engine computer will work the same with the distributor with the built in cam sensor and it's just a matter of rewiring it. You may need the earlier computer, but that might have a different wiring harness. I suppose there is no hole/plate on the new engine on the cylinder head you got to install the cam position sensor like on your blown engine?

Correct, there is no hole or plate for the new cam position sensor. I have talked to a couple of guys about sending the old and new blocks to a machine shop so they could match the hole exactly as there is a flat spot for the hole but it isnt drilled or tapped. One said it would probably work so long as the internals are identical. the other said while it may work he doesnt know if emisions will pass or fail after that approach. looking wire by wire it appears that if I leave the distributor installed I can hotwire into the old cam position sensor using the two wires there and installing the coil packs from my previous motor in a different location and running their wires to the correct places instead of drilling. Is there one option or the other that you would reccomend?

Can you 2.7l trade your distributor type motor for a coil pack type motor? It would be much better for you to use the original type motor.
