    Hi all,

I need some help. I have a 98 Tacoma, 4 cyl 2.7 4x4. The truck has always started up fine with no problems, until this past weekend. When I turn the key, the relay box clicks rapidly, but it will not start.

I checked online and figured it was the contacts in the starter and replaced those, but that didn't help.

I got a junk yard starter today and still nothing.

The battery is testing at 12.6V and I don't see any damage to any of the wires. All fuses are fine and the starter relay is in good shape as well.

Do you have any thoughts on what else to try? I'm stumped.

    Thanks!

Have the battery tested. It may show voltage on a multi meter of 12+ volts, but have almost no CCA. That can cause similar problems with the relay clicking.

I had a no start with my '98 where it sat for about a week then wouldn't crank. It had no relay click, but just a soft click then no noise. I hit the starter with a hammer softly about 5 times and it fire right up.

'02 Of course by no means am I a mechanic but my truck sat for a very long while (I did all the changing of the battery, gas additives) but in the end, I needed a new alternator & belt. Purrs like a kitten now. Mine did the clicking as well.
One of the reasons it sat for a while also is that a critter chewed through the vacuum hose right on top of the engine and left a heck of a mess, his/her acorns. I replaced that hose too.
