I've read through relevant threads. Checked bulbs, fuses 20 and 26 , looked for switch on transmission but could not find. Obviously I'm a newbie. I have a test light and a multimeter. Hoping someone can walk me through a diagnosis.

Should be pretty straight forward to diagnose, fuse, reverse light switch, and wiring.

The switch should be on the passenger side of the transmission case, quick easy check would be to unplug the switch, jump the terminals, and see if the reverse lights come on.

Thank you both. I fill find a jump wire small enough to bypass and report back.

with the switch bypassed I can get backup lights with some finessing of the bulbs. I notice that the plug (on the transmission) does not seat firmly on the switch..the locking tab does not click and I can pull it off.
I've also read there is a crush washer on the switch which can limit travel when worn. Is this applicable?
also read it can be the seat or socket under the shifter itself. I've replaced them 2x in the past few years. It'll pop out of first if I am lugging.
is it worth taking out the switch to check it?
    thx
