I would love to accommodate your skepticism but in '04 around here a dyno was few and far between.

I agree with @CanadaToy estimate of 15-20 hp.

This was my buddies old truck that Matt bought so I know this truck well. A lot of our conversation has been on PM.

That wire may be the culprit.

If he hasn't fixed it yet, I'd say it most definitely is.

It does have the tuner which I’m hoping @elnip can help walk me threw it. He thinking it will run just a little rich. Which I plan on returning ASAP gonna try and download software this weekend. It is different pin outs so I’m gonna try the one you sent me. And hope that works

Before you rewire, try fixing that brown wire. Might save you some time.

Then where are you getting your estimate from, if you don't have a dyno?

He gave a link to Gadgets old website. The estimate makes sense on a SC truck, I thought the truck we were dealing with was NA, and that's why I was skeptical.

I just saw that. I think you posted that as I was in the middle of typing...

That guy talks about a lot of other mods for a SC motor on that page, so, it's not clear to me if that dyno is form all those mods or just the MAF (dyno screen shot says "everything").

I'm no "tuner", this has been interesting to learn something, though.

But I guess I'll always be somewhat skeptical of the cost/benefit of tuning a Tacoma motor to squeeze out another couple HP. I mean, it's a Tacoma, lol. you don't buy these things for the power... :D

:). It's actually Gadget from URD before he started URD. He left up the page for reference. The dyno includes for a MAF upgrade as well as a tune. Everything else is equal.

TRDOLMAN actually his 305rwhp on his 3.4 back in the day... i'm shooting to hit the 300rwhp mark on mine.

Tacoma motors are actually used in dragsters. the 2.4 2rz is used by paradise racing and others and makes well upwards of 1000hp. Read thru the archives on customtacos.com for some really great reads.

2rz/3rz motors loved boost (especially the 2rz) where with a head gasket, studs, turbo and fuelling people were hitting upwards of 350rwhp on an otherwise stock engine. 5vz's are good to about 400rwhp until you need to add pistons, rods, studs and HG.

I put a 82 Supra AFM in my old 85 4Runner. That was the last Supra upgrade I ever did. Sounded great.

I remember TRD using the 4cyl motors in boats a while back, too, making quite a bit of HP mostly because they didn't have any of that emissions crap on them. I know they're used in lots of racing applications, pro-lite trucks, etc... I just don't see the cost/benefit in a daily driver little pickup truck - it still won't tow any more than 5k, or hold a ton (or even a quarter ton, lol) of bricks in the bed... I'm certainly not immune to the "because I can" mentality, though... This just makes me think of the kids bragging about their Civic making 200 hp, and I'm like, that's cute, my wife's car makes 260, lol...

Anyway, I think my old fart is showing... I'll leave now...

I have a 1997 with that big bullet, so if I were to upgrade to the 99 plus MAF or a Supra with my setup with it being methonal injected now, would it still have to be retuned?? In ALL my miles 555,000 I have never had a MAF problem and still have the original MAF, but if I could get an extra 20 hp that would be nice!!

I would go to a 99+ MAF and re-pin the harness. With the 99+ MAF you should not need a re-tune. With the Supra MAF you will need a re-tune.
