Sell it and buy a V6.

Honestly they were utility engines not race trucks.

150 engine HP is not a lot for the size and weight of your truck, add larger tires and lift and armor.. huge power loss.

Add intake, headers, exhaust, tune, re-gear.

Supercharger, turbo, engine swap. I've got the same thing and there's not much to do to one. Cams are available but it's not cost effective.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Sadly, the same can be said for the 3.4 when you add a big lift and weight with heavy tires to it. It only cranks out 190hp and that's before it hits the rear wheels.

Reason why my Tacoma is staying stock.

yes but my 3.4 V6 will out tow, out perform and still get a consistent 16-19 mpg.

I will never own another 4 cyl truck unless its a short cab base model 5 speed and low.

Lift, tires/wheels, bumpers, and armor will slow any truck down some. I know mine isn't a highway cruiser, but it does just fine in the rough stuff.

Substantial power?,, one you can really feel and have make sense to you?.

Low boost turbo kits. About $3500,,allowing a little bit for add ons that you will need to get it running.

Otherwise,,all of the other suggestions that were posted for a hopeful gain.

the most dramatic difference if you do everything there is to do to it is going to make it accelerate just fast enough to make a pack of cigarettes fall over and that's it after spending $5k on upgrades.

it is what it is and anything you do is just wasted money for no difference or barely enough difference to even notice. no matter what you do to it, its not going to act like a sporty car does with a 4 cylinder because its a truck.

No sense in really building a 2.7l for power or economy in 4x4 configuration. Go to a bone yard and pull a small block v8 or v6 with drivetrain and be done with it. Motor and tranny with install will net the most for your money.
