Hello all. I am running 265/75r15 long trail TA tires. I noticed that i have a tear in it and can see a little bit of the metal. Also I noticed that all 4 tires have little cracks on them. I have no air leaks. Tires are from 2014 with 70% tread.

Are these small cracks normal or should I get new tires? Also, is the tear on the tire repairable?
    See pictures. Thanks

    Damage is not repairable.

Those cracks are from dry rotting. Dry rotting is typically due to age and UV exposure. They're normal in the sense that all tires do it when they get old, but you shouldn't be running a tire that has a split in it.

Tires have a lifespan in time, most likely yours are out of date.

    Time to replace your tires.

Also when tires get dried out enough to not only crack but split and run like yours are they're about guaranteed to have very little traction in the dry and downright dangerous in the rain.

Look at the date stamp on the sidewall.

I bet those were made in 12, even though you bought them in 14

Want to thank you guys for the quick replies. Should I replace these tires right away? I have a 6 mile roundtrip commute daily so I'm pretty light on these tires. My taco just sits most of the time, usually during warmer weather because I ride my mountain bike to work. I recently learned too that the dry rot could be from the car not being used daily.

Should I replace these tires asap or will I be ok for another month or so if I drive about 80 miles a month. I need to save so I can get new tires. Thanks again guys!!

I also wanted to add that these long trail TA tires are really good. They last a long time and are pretty smooth on the road. Believe it or not these tires are from 2014 and still have about 75 to 80 percent tread on them. Unfortunately the dry rot got to the tires so need to replace them now. I highly recommend these tires. Thanks

If dry rotting of a tire with that much tread left is something you're facing, I'd suggest that you consider how much you're spending on tires vs the wear you're getting out of them. If you're get 20% of the usable tread life of the tires for say $700, I'd be looking for tires that cost $500 but might not last as long since longevity isn't an issue at 80 miles a month.

You can also catch rebates and things from Discount Tire and save upwards of $150 on a set of tires if you catch a good sale.
