1999 Tacoma, I live in México. For now I just want to be able to use the truck. What are my options for disassembling the ignition and getting the thing started?

After that, what do I need to order from Rock Auto for the ignition, doors, and fuel door?

Thanks in advance. Use of the truck is priority but obviously want to get it back to full function eventually.

You can take the ignition switch off the back of the key thing. Gott take the panel under the steering wheel off. But then you still have the steering lock problem, I don't know how you'll deal with that.

Two screws hold the switch on back of the key cylinder...

pop that loose and any flat blade can twist that and start it...

    easy peasy......

BUT BUT your steer column is still locked......

If you lost the key its gonna be a pain in the ass to change the cylinder out...
if you cant put the key in the run position.....all that wont seperate from the column.....

only way to get a part is to drill it out......there's videos and threads on how to do this.....toyotas.....

When you buy one of these trucks......you never use the master key or one that came with it........theory is your gonna have this truck so long.....key is gonna flat wear out eventually and need to cut another from original master.....

If you have a boat and dont have a fire extinguisher on it.....you just deserve what u get.....

Any lock smiths any place close to you?

Pop the right door lock cylinder out and have a key made option one.

#2 It takes two people to drill out the pin that holds the lock cylinder in. One to drill the other to hold the pin from spinning the pin spins and defeats being able to drill. Then have a new key made.

#3 go full gangster just break everything and use the electrical ignition switch.

That is the thing to unlock the steering 2 choices get the lock cylinder out allowing you access to remove the lock.

Destroy every thing to get to the steering lock.

Once you see what your dealing with it is simple.

You don`t know anyone that has ever done this near where you live.

Oh ok so I misunderstood Silver Taco's post. If I remove the ignition lock cylinder I will be able to both start the truck and steer the truck, correct?

100yrs ago....I used to unload rail cars....

sometimes the loaders would not stash the keys in the tri-levels right....

SO two ways to move it ......one is to snap the steering wheel and bust the lock...
yeah they're not very tough.....really just show....

The other was to hook a chain to a semi and drag it across the parking lot........

third way is to roll couple feet....and have someone on each fender....bounce front and repoint it.....

You could order a key made by Toyota. These trucks don't have anti-theft chips in the keys so they are cheap to make. I think all you have to do is provide your VIN and they can look up the code to make a new key without a copy.

As Kiloyard stated, go to a Toyota dealership parts department with proof of ownership (title and ID) and they can cut a key off a keycode decoded by the VIN. As long as you have the original cylinders...

Disconnect the battery and wait 10 minutes* then take the steering wheel off, then take covers off of the housing behind the steering wheel. You will see where the steering lock housing is attached to the steering column. On the left side you will see where the sheer bolts that hold the lock housing to the column are. With a small sharp chisel strike the edge of the sheer bolt shoulder in a counterclockwise direction. The bolt will loosen. Once that bolt is loose the other one should loosen. You can then take the entire housing off and then decide if you want to replace the whole thing with new lock cylinder or ?
