Just wondering what the consensus of the group here is. Have a line on a 2001 Taco, extended cab, manual, 4x4 TRD, 154k miles. He's asking 9k and I'm considering it. Do y'all think I'm about to get hosed?

Before you ask, I don't know much about possible issues. I looked it over best I can (its in another state) and I don't really see anything glaringly wrong with it other than usual dings and such. I'm more just asking if the price is right for a "good" condition truck. Thanks in advance

Sounds a bit high. Check the frame for rust.

Thanks, I'll give it a look over when I get there. Any particular spots to focus on besides the main undercarriage?

Welcome to TW!:hattip:Check the overall frame wear and mileage is high at that price but overall pics of the truck and more info may help in determining the purchase.

KBB says its about 5k too high. I was gonna say offer 7k, but looks more like you should offer 6k if there are no problems.

I appreciate all the responses. To those saying too high a price, other than KBB (which from what I've seen Tacos rarely go for) the price seems more or less near what other similar trucks are going for when I search nationwide dealers. Or am I missing something? Not trying to argue, just seeing if there's a search resource outside of cars.com/cargurus.

Depends on location, but that's about right for my area price wise

Check frame for rust and look for broken leaf springs. Other than that, Tacoma's are pretty reliable

I can't believe that these tacos go for so much. I love seeing any 'book' show it's 'book' value at 5k to 7k but REAL LIFE shows people paying twice that. That's the true value, what someone is willing to pay for it. I might have to sell and make a few grand... Unreal.

Yeah, I've been on this search for a few years now and the prices have been insane. There's good and bad to it though. You also get the yahoos that, and I this is hand to god real, had a 2005 taco with 280k, 3 panels seriously dinged in and a broken window along with a slew of other issues saying that 14k was more than a fair price since "they hold their value so well". I paid almost 13k for my 02, v6, trd 4x4, 5 speed, with 125,000 about 3 years ago. I spent prob 2 years looking for one before I bought it. Saw one at a dealer last week 1st gen, double cab with 325,000 miles and they were asking $8,800

I have a clean (2nd owner, I've had it the longest) '02 TRD 4WD and I wouldn't even think of letting go of it for less than 10k.

    Here's my recent purchase story.

I'm in Massachusetts. Prices for good Tacos are crazy here because of rust.

I just bought a 1 owne,r 95, 4wd, xtra cab V6. One owner vehicle with all maintenance records including the original window sticker. Some extras, bushwhacker flares, a cap, seat covers, spray in bedliner. 100k miles. ZERO RUST on this truck - guy who owned it was a crazy person, kept it garaged and covered (!!!), washed it obsessively, truck frame and underside was painted and coated, never driven in salt...it was used as a 3rd vehicle to haul dirt bikes around during the spring and summer in the bed. When I say zero rust I don't mean what most people mean. I mean there is ZERO RUST. ZERO.

Based on that description, what would you pay? I paid 8k for it and I think I stole it.

I shipped it from Rochester NY to my place in MA, that was after a nationwide search for about 4 months. I looked at thousands of trucks online and this was one of 2 or 3 that I would have bought. The guy told me he had 7 people coming to look at the truck and he had it listed for 2 days. I didn't even try negotiating the price. Other trucks listed at 8k were newer model years but had 2x or 3x the miles, many owners, rust, mods, and who knows what else. Other good ones were 10k+. (I almost went in on a tundra listed at 14k but balked at the price because blue book was 8k. While I was equivocating he sold it for 13.7k.)

If you find a good one for a fair price, just jump on it. I guarantee if you don't someone else will. You're either going to pay a premium up front for a clean truck or put the money in the back end to repair it...I would rather pay it up front, have peace of mind and avoid the headache of fixing something I just bought.

KBB, edmunds, NADA are all useless to value these trucks in my experience.

My opinion is, that price seems good, all things being equal.

That's a fair price for the Pacific Northwest. Like others have said, KBB/Edmunds really doesn't represent typical asking or sale price of the older Tacomas.

Check or ask about frame rust, lower ball joints, and any maintenance records.

Yeah, I'm already looking at videos to find out where on the truck to check for what kinds of wear. All I can hope for is the best. That and a long drive back

I think it should be around $8,000, and I shopped a long time and saw actual going prices. KBB, as you noted, is not what people are paying for these. But if you love it, pay the slight premium if it checks out. Usually, there is SOMETHING not perfect about it that should give you room to negotiate.

KBB values are irrelevant to the market.

Clean 1st gen Tacomas go for a premium out here (Colorado). If that truck is clean and in good shape, $9000 sounds about right. Hell it might even be considered a good deal out here.
