If I change wheels I'd do the Ray 10 in gunmetal and paint the ring Inferno. If only they ever had them in stock.

Keep an eye on the blemishes thread if you plan to paint them anyway. Gotta move quick as soon as they show up though.

I really like the way the Baja Designs fog light kit fits. I just put in the rigids, and I'm not real happy with the way it mounts and looks...

Only thing that slightly bugs me is not being able to aim them much but at the same time i like the look of their adapter ring sitting so close to the oem openings. And i did have to bend the tabs on one of their brackets just a little to get the light better aligned to the bumper cover opening.

@Dave41079 you have an aftermarket gas tank skid, right? Have you ever actually hit it while riding a trail?

I'm not really impressed with what I've seen for sale so far. Either too heavy, too expensive, or designs look wimpy. And I don't really want to take the time to design & fab my own any time soon.

My current thought is to either just leave OEM alone or maybe weld a few strips of flat bar along the length and 1 across the front leading edge for some added strength. What do you think?

I have the RCI gas tank skid. It's a definite improvement over stock. Luckily I haven't smacked it on anything yet, but as low as the gas tank hangs, it will definitely happen.

Don't see a 4R option on theirs. Looks like that one gives only puncture protection, not crush protection. Fine for Tacoma but tank is pretty low on 4R.

I know I've seen them from there for T4R. Won't hurt to ask.

Anything is better than nothing. Which I have nothing :) I should get one...

Since that plastic one requires removal of the metal oem tank skid, I may just leave that as an option for later after/if I damage the oem.

Leaning towards either doing nothing or just a little reinforcement for now I think.

How much room is there between the OEM skid and the gas tank? Got space to weld angle iron on top for gussets?

    It's a plastic tank so maybe it's ok to flex/crush a little?

Hard to tell. Don't think it's much. I plan to put any reinforcement on the outside of the OEM skid though. Safety first. Keep a smooth interior so that if it does get pushed against the tank, no edges up in there.

That makes the exhaust smell funny and the wife complains about the clovers in the driveway.

Good point. Flat bar accross the bottom couldn't hurt

@dirty deeds has me thinking plastics now...
    1/4x24x48" is only about 10lb.

Looked up how people use it on trucks and UTVs for skids, body panels, etc.

If I can find a good local source with reasonable pricing, I might do the flat bar reinforcement plus a thinner layer of UHMW. Might even consider adding a layer of it to my factory front skid and make a matching transmission skid.

Get it all smooth and slippery under there.

Good luck. Last time I checked for 1/4" UHMW, had to buy a whole 4' x 8' sheet. @ $400

@totmacher if you don't mind me asking what sort of irreversible mods did you have on your Tacoma (CMC, welded sliders, cut fenders, etc.)? And did it affect the trade in amount you recieved? I'm SERIOUSLY looking into a 4Runner, my truck is a 2013 DCSB TRD OR 4x4 Pyrite Mica Auto with around 66k. But I have done some mods that can't be "removed". Other than that the truck is in excellent shape. It's been paid off for a couple of years now, and I don't like the idea of a large payment again, but if I could get a decent trade in offer on a slightly used 4R I would be tempted. Thanks

    @Fox2011PM
I had trimmed fenders and snorkel.
My cmc had a cover plate so you couldn't tell unless you knew to look.
Those were the only irreversible mods. Because of cut fenders, i left the front bumper, rims & bigger tires on it. Left cold air intake as well.

Mods added very little or no value to trade. With most mods removed, i still got within a couple hundred of what it was quoted fully modded. Trade quotes from 3 toyota dealer were pretty much on par with what KBB site estimated. Carmax lowballed it big time.

Remove and reuse what you can. What you can't reuse will sell pretty quick if your price is right.
