Went in for the 15K mile service. I was almost gonna blow it off, as I know they basically just give it a once-over and rotate the tires. Well, glad I did.
They found a leaky rear axle seal. Not bad, but needs fixed. So they have the parts ordered and it'll take a few days to get there and me get there.
Well ... A rear axle seal? Those are things that should last for 100K miles before you even have to think about it ... Not 15K and have it fail.
Of course I know that any new/newer thing, there's always the possibility of something going screwy... Just never thought it would be something like an axle seal.
Maybe I should be happy that it's all it is? IDK. Not really happy about it though..

    Shit happens.

If that's all that goes wrong, you got a good truck. I understand your position though.

If you want, I'll tell you some horror stories about my mythical, Japanese made FJ that will make you feel better.

Sounds like maybe that 15k service served it’s purpose, right? This really isn’t a thing so if it was me, I’d frame it differently…

“Great experience doing the 15k. Service guys were thorough, found an uncommon issue, and are taking care of it.”

I’d check to see if your rear breather is plugged. Definitely earlier than they should have gone, but shit happens sometimes

They found it before you ran the diff dry so at the end of the day I’d say your still coming out ahead. They could’ve just sent it back out to ya

    It's a secret
Another way to look at your luck of the draw...it was a small chance of the thousands of other trucks that do not have that issue...could be a cosmic hint you ought to buy yourself a lottery ticket or two which you may end up being lucky with.

Oh please that’s minor and the dealer caught it before it became a failure, plus it’s covered under warranty. You should see how many vehicles under many brands are released from the manufacture with defects just for the dealers to correct. Work 40 plus years in the automotive field and you will see everything, nothing surprises me anymore.

'08 FJ, New 6mt @ 26k was the final nail in the coffin for me. Before that was 3 windshields, new front brakes, Throw out bearing (X2), New shifter linkage/syncro, poor seat fabric that was wearing through, poor plastics that scratched if you sneezed on them, roof leaked at wire loom for roof lights, ugh.

Some other crap. Sold it at 26k for what I got it for so it ended well I guess. Of course, if I kept it, it would be worth the same amount today lol.

"Made in Japan" doesn't mean much to me lol.

OP, it can always be worse I guess.

Not sure that’s really a quality issue as much as it is something that happens with all makes and models. Just be glad it was caught under warranty. I work in a service department and the shit I’ve seen on even factory new vehicles would surprise you.

^ This, vechiles are made up of thousands of components and sometimes things get by the inspectors. I remember back when Cadillac had so many cars in the post production red flag lot that they had to stop production to make more room!

Why be disappointed in Toyota quality? This is a part made by an outside supplier, and from my experience new parts can fail for any number of problems like an unseen flaw in the material or a fault in installation. To blame Toyota for such a small issue is pretty useless.

I just installed a brand new electric motor on a compressor on a vehicle at work. Started the vehicle after install and the rear bearing was howling. The vehicle had to be parked until a new motor arrived. It happens. Nothing is perfect.

There is also a leaky front timing cover and Coolant crossover leak, and shitty trans programming. But most of that was corrected by 2019. Every car/truck has some issues
