Did you only read one small portion of my post? Parts fail... new, used doesn't matter. Toyota is fixing the issue for him. Seems idiotic to me to start burning down the place for something that has been caught and addressed.

Damn I thought about selling mine when the O2 sensor went bad at 83K. And oh those original tires and wiper blades don't get me started. Guess I'm lucky only 2 windshields had to be replaced after a rock hit them.

The quality I'm most disappointed with is the dealership. Had the differential's and transfer gear oil changed around 8 years ago... charged me for 11 qts instead of the 6-7 qts it actually takes. All service manager could come up with was "well, sometimes they take more". Haven't had them touch my truck since. My neighbor took his Taco in and they charged him for 7 qts of engine oil after having it changed out. I know they have to make money but come on...

The service manager needed some oil for his vehicle. It's easier to charge you for it. It's called employee discount.

Oh, I'm not complaining about the dealer or the guys working there. They're a great bunch of people.
I'm just miffed that something stupid like this happened. And yeah I know shit like this happens. I'm assuming that when it was built, someone probably just didn't get the seal in it perfectly square and flush.
I was almost gonna blow off the 15K service as it wasn't oil-change time ... Just check things and rotate tires. But I'm glad I went now... Especially as I'm planing a road trip in two months...

I know the quality has changed from what it was (had a new 4Runner back in 1988) but so far in the 14 years i've had my Tacoma the only issue so far was a burned out tail light bulb. What I'm most worried about with these newer trucks is all the electronics.

Most likely it is sealed by a robot. Diffs just have RTV around them if I'm not mistaken(at least that is the case for my 12 ) Anyways not a big deal, nothing failed. Was the leak so bad it was dripping on ground? Sounds like it wasn't if you only noticed it during maintenance That kind of leak isn't gonna do any real damage for a long time if left un treated. My truck has a couple of them and my truck is beat lol. Anyways I don't think this is anything to worry about Toyota reliability because of a leaking seal that can be fixed with RTV.

3rd gen guys get so defensive when you question the 3rd gen reliability/quality

Toyota can only piggy back off of previous generations reliability for so long.

IMHO, nothing mechanical that is manufactured and assembled by humans (or robots) is perfect. They make mistakes. The idea is to catch them while they are still small mistakes, which your dealer did. Could have been worse. Yea it's a pain, but hopefully that will be the only catch.

People buying a new vehicle and having an issue and being upset is nothing new.
People complaining about the quality/reliability of the current generation vs. previous ones is nothing new.
People saying Toyota is coasting on reputation is nothing new.

Have you ever installed an axle seal before? Any imperfection or not being perfectly seated can easily cause a leak. Toyota found the issue and will fix it no questions asked and you're disappointing with quality? I assume you've never dealt with issues with a GM or FCA product before lol. Shit, I had a Subaru dealership let me leave service without advising me there was no oil reading on my dipstick.
