The default should be fresh air on after Park.
They can change that via Techstream.

Works for about 2 min. Tried this on the GFs Camry and the only thing that worked is the evap cleaner

One of the few complaints I have so far on this truck. The AC defaulting to recirc every time the truck starts up with the AC on, and the fact the ECT defaults to off (a separate rant for another time).

Recirc sucks for winter / cold weather driving and keeping windows from fogging up. I used to laugh at people who drove around in winter with their windows fogged the hell up because they didn't realize they had the recirc button / lever on (or they were driving vehicles which AC systems defaulted to recirc). Well, toyota, with the 3rd gen, put a lot more idiots on the road with fogged up windows.

Only time recirc is needed is in extreme hot temps (think Phoenix, Vegas) when you need to lower the entering air temp to the evap to quickly and increasingly decrease delta-T and increase efficiency, thereby cooling the cabin quicker. Beyond that, it's not of much use. At all. Fresh air is almost always - 98% of the time - more desirable than recirculated air....unless you're trying to get max efficiency out of your AC system. Or offroading in a dusty environment with windows up and AC on (okay...who does that? Landrover driver much?). Or following behind a manure truck....oh....wait a minute....

In any HVAC application, as much (filtered) fresh air as you can get is king. Unless you're trying to increase efficiency, cost effectiveness, speed of cooling, or pushing a system beyond design specs.

In commercial (occupied building) applications, 100% recirc is the most efficient way to go. Lowest cost. Quickest space to temp times. Try it. And then tell me how you handle all the tenant complaints about stale air, burning eyes, odors, etc. You get the idea.

As a commercial HVAC guy, and someone who knows how vehicle and commercial AC systems work, one of my first "to do" items on this truck....AC default to OSA (outside air). Because most of us aren't morons and know when we want recirc air. And aren't askeered of the .25 mpg hit we'll take because the compressor clutch was engaged for an entire 3 minutes more out of our 1 hour commute to get to the cabin temp we are looking for.

You know what? If it's 115 degrees outside, I think I have the brains to possibly...maybe...engage a recirc button manually to speed cabin cooling if I need it. But maybe BigGov, the EPA, and manufacturers in their quest to meet standards decided we are all idiots, and we now have "default to recirc" on our vehicles.

I don't want to blame Toyota on this one...but come on already. Is this a Toyota or a Pontiac?

This, I will admit, was a Toyota fail on the 3rd gen.

I try and rotate between the two alot. Use recir, and then fresh for a bit. If im traveling on a long trip, its usually on recirc for the 20 minutes or so, then it goes to outside air.

Have the same issue on my second gen. Tried the lysol, didnt work as well as expected. Bought a can of the evap cleaner but ran into an issue. I located the AC drain underneath the truck, but was unable to insert the straw through the ac drain and into the evap ( seems it gets caught on something before it enters the evap, believe there is a turn that is impeding it)? Any tips to get the straw through?

    Took a few pics:

So at the end of the day, spraying underneath the cabin air filter is the same as attempting to spray via the drain tube ( the bottom pic)

I change all my filters once a year whether they need it or not, but the cabin filter always needs it.

I always find some debris from trees pollen and what not in there that can combine with normal condensation overtime to give off a smell.
Also as a bonus, a clean filter may help prolong the life of the blower motor as the air can flow freely as it is meant to do.
And with this PM schedule I seldom if ever have to contend with the musky smell, but even so, any a/c system can give it off if the dew & temperature are at their mating point and thus maybe even give off a rottencrotch smell??

Once they get inside it's time to strike them out by pitching them some Lysol or some of the other products in the posts above.

    Good luck!
