Every time I crack a system open I vacuum it for at least an hour to make sure all the moisture is out. Even longer if it’s a humid or rainy day. I was giving him shit about purging refrigerant with him being in commiefornia.

This is not the proper way to leak test.

    I have.

I am sure there is more than one way of doing it depending on if the system is charged or not.
In an empty system it makes sense to me if you pull a vacuum and then wait a awhile you should still have a vacuum on the gauges. If there is a leak you wouldn't have a vacuum anymore.
I have read about other methods for when the system is charged such as soap and water, uv-dye, etc..

    Any additional info is appreciated.

The misleading part was when you posted this statement which reads as though it was start to finish in 30 minutes.

If there is a leak, under vacuum it will be pulling in air and water vapor. Then the system has to be pressured up to find the leak, fix it, then vacuum again. It just takes longer.
I prefer using dry nitrogen to pressure up and leak test.

How about a deep vacuum to really dry that thing out.
