AC and defrost takes some of your engine’s power. Next time you are steadily cruising down the road at a constant speed with the AC off, turn the AC on a feel the power change. It is noticeable.

Haven't looked, but most A/C compressors have an electronic clutch (some may use variable vanespumps and the pulley is direct mounted).

Can't you just splice a switch for the the a/c clutch power line so you have ultimate control when the compressor kicks in?

Yeah, I think I did that on a 72 Chevy. Not sure that still applies. These new vehicles aren't so easy to "Shade-Tree".

Yep. I know that issue with R134. I do think there are design differences and improvements since it was first introduced though. Our shatty Dodge Stratus would blow it out if it sat too long. Our other cars (all foreign made after that) never needed even a recharge. One used to sit a month or so at a time and I had full control over the a/c function in that car. A/C would get used maybe once or twice a year.

With the Taco, just like cycling the 4wd system for 10mi or more a month, I cycle the a/c. I do that after the interior is warmed up in the winter. It is the inverse problem that I'd like a solution to. :D

Hey, someone report this guy. Clearly a troll. :bananadance:

I seriously considered a "fully controllable AC" 4Runner until I learned the terrible, terrible truth about the newer ones: They are eunichs. OP is upset about automatic AC...They don't even let you shift gears in these new 'Runners!

Yup. If the T4R came with an MT option, I would have pushed real hard for my Wife to get one. Her Forester has the shatty CVT, but the turbo is fun. Great motor, wrong tranny.

I'm gonna nudge you back on topic bro. Does the Forester AC come on automatically with defrost?

And then I'm going to go back off topic and say I agree with you on that motor. It's badass. Funny (and true) story: I actually took the time to write Subaru a letter expressing my angst about the lack of a MT option with the turbo.

    I like your guidance.

Gawd. I ride in that thing so infrequently that I can't remember for sure. Hers has ACC and what comes to mind is that the a/c light will comes on when moving the vent knob to the defrost settings. From there, I believe the a/c button can be manually switched off, like the T4R. Although, if you hit the separate defrost button, a/c is locked on.

Given the direction that Subby and the rest of the industry is going, esp with CUVs, I was tempted to let them know but felt that it would end up in the round file. At the time, I tried to locate a 2007 or 2008 XT MT or an MT Legacy 2.5GT wagon. There were none to be found used even in other states except for the east coast. I wanted her to wait to try the 2015 WRX MT, but they aren't making that in the wagon so that would have been a non-starter for her.

I really like the XV more as it is more in line with what the Forester used to be. No turbo, leather, or MT to be had.

Your point? As I said, it is annoying when done by accident since moving it back one notch does not shut off a/c or recirc. Good enough?
