    Hey everyone,
Still new here so be easy on me.

Short story so you guys can start asking questions to get to the bottom of this.

My heat works very well. However, when I use defrost there is a sound like it’s struggling to blow air. There’s also a irregular (as in random not as in strange) ticking sound that accompanies this.

It goes, and I quote, “.....t...t.ttttTTTTTtt.t..t....t” and fades away, waits 10 seconds and then happens again.

The reason I include all this is because this noise combo happens every second that the AC is on, and it only blows “cool air.” Not enough to change the cab temp, just enough to blow like a fan.

The guy I bought it from said they had just charged the AC, and I recall it blowing cold for a couple days after I bought it. I could just try to recharge it, but I’m worried about the sound. It doesn’t seem mechanical because of the irregularity, but it doesn’t sound like a good sound.

Maybe I could try locating a leak? Idk. I’m a hardware guy, AC’s and electronics give me anxiety lol.

Thanks in advance for the help!

    Hey welcome to TW!

    Try to record the sound.

If I'm sounding it out correctly (lol), it sounds like it could be your compressor clutch failing or maybe it wasn't oiled properly when replaced. Had to replace my compressor clutch. Does your A/C light flash when this happens?

If the system was just recharged, you might have a leak in the system- which is a separate issue.

    Goodluck!

I don’t know about the noise but since the previous owner had to recharge the system then that means you have a leak.
It could be the compressor is trying to come on but due to the leak and lack of refrigerant in the system the saftey presure switch is doing its job by shutting down and saving the compressor.

If you have a leak, you should get it fixed. You don’t want air and moisture in your ac system.

When it is doing this listen on the passenger side floorboard area to locate the noise. It sounds like the Air Mix Servo drive gears trying to position. They are known to get stuck or break teeth off the plastic gears inside.
