right but also be careful because if some tree hugger asshole gets a video of you releasing into the air you can get a $25k fine over it and they can get a $10k reward for reporting you.

one of our mechanics used to keep a 2 liter bottle full of dish soap and water and if a home owner was watching to see how he safely removed the Freon, he would stick the hose in the bottle and vented it through the bottle and said the soap water traps the Freon as it bubbles so its not airborne

I'm familiar with the rest you posted, except I've never had to jumper the pressure switch, just putting in the first can give the system enough pressure to activate the compressor.

I just noticed my vacuum pump is reading low oil level and I don't feel like sneaking to the shop to get the oil tonight. And it pouring down rain. I think this is a good time to call it a night. Do some knee exercises and cash in.

I'm pretty happy on the progress I made. I really didn't think I was going to tackle this job until week two of my recovery.

    Many thanks, Karl.

I figure I better close this thread out.

Last night I added close to 2 ounces of pag46 oil. This is the stuff that is mixed with a couple ounces of 134a. It has the same thread connection on the can as the cans of 134 a. System sucked it right in.

After the oil, I added the 1st can of 134a before I turned on the truck. The system pulled in roughly half the can. After that, I started the truck, turned on max air and went around to the can being filled. I used my hands to warm the can, thus most of the refrigerant was removed from the can. I figure I got a solid 10 ounces out of the first can. At this time, the a/c was blowing super cold and it was 80* in the shop. I decided to stop adding any more refrigerant.

I didn't have time to research how much refrigerant my system holds. The label on the underside of the hood is long gone. With that said, I could hve just looked at the wifes truck. That just hit me as I'm typing this.

Is there any emmidiate damage that can occur if a system is under charged? All I know is the wife and I drove around town for a bit today and the a/c was outputting plenty of cold air.

If anyone cares, I just noticed that Tractor Supply is selling cans of 134a at $5 a can. Funny, I was in Florida last month and the stuff was selling for $17. Go figure. Or, with the introduction of the new refrigerant, 1234a, maye everyone is dumping their old stock. Odd. I've noticed the oposite when new materials are introduced.

Anyways, just wanted to close out this thread. Ih hate it when someone starts a thread and never concludes the things.

Thanks for all the insite Karl.

no not at all, if its low it will tend to short cycle the compressor on and off at higher rpms at highway speeds because the pressure drops as rpms increase so if its low that where it will show up.

do the finger test I explained earlier, if you feel that "ice" cold hit your finger then the evaporator is full of liquid and the system is fully charged. sometimes if you aren't sure just slightly raise the idle by hand and that "ice" feel should immediately be felt. also if you are getting about 50* temp at the vents on high cool at idle with the windows rolled down, then your good

I would have only added 1 ounce of oil to it because too much can cause it to not cool right but it sounds like your good and im not sure just how much dry components you added to the system. my rule of thumb is I usually just add 1 ounce of oil after an evaporator or if I do a condenser and drier replacement. you just want enough to have a thin oil film covering everything.

yep I got "ice cold " finger tip test to pass.

I was specifically listening for the compressor to short cycle and didn't notice anything odd. Of course, we were not on the xway.

I think my vents were close to 45* when I last checked. All I had was an anolog fridge thermometer and it showed 45*ish, plus it 'felt' cold. I'm happy.

Next ime i get on the xway, I'll check for short cycling, if I notice any, I'll add part of another can.

    Again, many thanks.

I appreciate not getting the "your not a pro, you need to take it to a pro" bull shit that seems to jump out on lots of forums. Dammit, I got the tools and I want to learn. Don't tell me Ihave to take it to a shop!

    Thanks

if you got 45 then you are perfectly charged.

vent temp is 10* above actual coil temp and the coil temp when fully charged is 35*

and the next time, take it to a shop and pay them way too much money to do it because this was way too complicated for you to do :p

Now, as long as it passes the final test. Operateds normally for several seasons, which it should since I held vacuum for 15 hours.

With that said, i am notoriously hard on radiators and condensors. My 1998 got 5 radiators during its 15 year lifespan. every one was from physical trama. I think i only did a couple condensors.
