Every time i turn on the A/C i hear a loud humming noise...just started to happen. I'm thinking to replace the a/c filter? Not really sure...Anyone have the same issue with their 2001 Tacoma?

Could be an imbalanced hamster cage (fan blade). get under your glove box and remove the 3 screws that hold it on. Keep a vacuum handy in case a bunch of crap falls out. If you want, and there are no visual signs of damage/debree in the fan, you can also turn on your fan while holding the motor in hand to see if it is what is vibrating. Just don't let it hit anything while it's on, it spins fast!

if under hood, check pulleys/bearings. also just making sure. it's a humming, not a whistling?

yeah probably something stuck in your vents. remove motor and blow the cage out and the vents. and get under there and look inside the fan compartment. don't just flap a brush around hoping to get whatever might be in there out.

Just make sure, we're talking about the hamster cage underneath the glove box right? I'll go to town on that

Yes. and it's compartment. and if you have a compressor, blow into the vents to try and back out anything that might be in there. and make sure to do the same for the floor vents. and change the air directional settings to make sure the blend door is being blown out as well.

first he said the noise is under the hood, so that means he has a fan belt slipping or bad idler pulley or clutch bearing, but then you and the OP start agreeing that its something inside the truck and most likely something hitting the fan, which makes sense "if" the noise is coming from "inside" the truck and NOT under the hood as originally stated.

so I don't know what you guys are talking about with this, but your not making any sense with where its going based on what has ben said in this thread so far, so you guys must have talked about this privately and left out a lot of information that wasn't included in this thread

first post. OP never mentions where the sound is coming from.

4th post he establishes it's coming from the engine compartment. however he isn't 100% sure. especially if he only hears it from the drivers seat and it's coming from the direction of the engine compartment. this is what i understand.

6th post. he mentions that it's more of a whistling sound than humming.

humming sounds are caused more from vibrations from bad bearings or the like. slipping belts don't really squeel for very long. usually just too cold/loose and will tighten or grip better once warmed. either way the belt doesn't coincide with a "humming" as the OP originally stated.

and since he said it was only when the AC was on, and that it was more of a whistling than a humming. that usually indicates something stuck in the vents causing air to pass through small holes causing the whistling.

finally. it's a very simple process to clean out the fan and it's compartment. it literally costs nothing unless he needs to buy a screwdriver and gas to go get the screwdriver. very little time wasted, and he can chalk this up as preventative inspection just in case there really is crap lodged somewhere around the compartment.

if this doesn't work then the OP can return and provide the results, allowing us to look in another area of the vehicle.

though you are right. a loose belt could easily cause the squealing that he mentioned in the 4th post. however, belts don't tend to right out squeal all the time out of nowhere. they usually just start as chirps when engaging the compressor/AC. building up to a situation with lots of squealing.

yep, it was just hard to follow were this was going but seams it would be easy to tell by opening the hood and revving the engine, if its belts or bearings he would then easily see and/or hear it you would think?

Alright, thanks for putting all this time into this post. So just to clarify, the noise(whistling) is coming from the under the hood only when i put the A/C on. I haven't gotten a chance to clean out the hamster cage which i will do later tonight.

With that said, something is leaking under neath my truck. It's not the oil, its sure feels and smells like water...haha The leak is right next to the front wheel(passenger side.) My guess is a/c leaking? But I'm not sure. I just do basic maintenance on this truck, changing oil, oil filter, air filter, and fluids. My truck is a tacoma 2001 2.7l 4 banger 4wd(if that helps at all diagnosing the problem).

the water leak is normal, the a/c makes water and is supposed to drip water when it runs and a short time after it is shut off

see if any fan belts seam loose and replace the fan belt if it isn't loose. the underside wears out and you cant tell just by looking at it that its slipping but the squeak is "probably" from the belt slipping. if it was the idler pulley it would most likely squeak all the time.

Hmmmmm ok, but i didn't use it all this morning or today for that matter....and i still got leakage. Just double checking to make sure it's the A/C or maybe could it be something else? thanks for your input. I appreciate it.

if it was the heater core it would be antifreeze so maybe it was just trapped rain water that just found a way to drain out
