The bass player in my band (y’a I’m a grandpa who plays guitar in a classic rock band with 3 other old guys for fun) is a certified mechanic with decades of experience at an independent garage. We were talking about towing with the Tacoma long term and the auto transmission. I was relating some of the comments that get posted here about the auto and he sent me this which I copied for your enjoyment:)

“I have clients that pull closed in trailers full of tools everyday with a 3rd gen Tacomas. I have never seen a transmission issue yet. They are the best small pickup in my opinion. It’s only the new cvt transmissions that are garbage. And mostly on Nissan.”

Whole heartedly agree, the 6 speeds are pretty bullet proof! Especially when you keep up with the fluids. I think that one guy who did 1.2 million miles on his taco said he never changed the fluid in it. His interview is on YouTube somewhere.

To be fair, I think the posts here confirm this. All of the complaining about the transmission is the indecisive nature of its shifting, not actual failures.

Ya and he’s the first person to point out a crap vehicle. There’s a few brands that he flat out refuses to work on and he sends them to other garages.

When I was considering a Subaru Forester to go off-road (it is sad to remember ever being that naive), I finally got just smart enough to ask a local truck-customizing shop and was given 2 immediate off-road recommendations: Jeep JK, Toyota Tacoma. He did not laugh exactly at my thought of Forester (he showed *some* respect for me) but it was not even on his list.

Well yes, Toyota's documentation states the AC60 is stronger than the A750, and the A750 has been used in everything from V8 Tundras to diesel Prados. OVTune's Matt posted the AC60 could take 500 lb-ft from his twin-turbo kit during testing with no issues. Toyota's factory shift logic has been the source of most complaints.

I cant speak specifically to Toyota but the only transmission I ever had to replace/repair due to failure in my entire life of car ownership was a CVT.

Wife drives a 2017 Forester. It's a great car for around town, and we've towed a 1000 lb camper with it on dirt and on a 16-day trip to Yellowstone.
It's the only other vehicle I'd ever consider owning other than my 21 Tacoma. But it is not built for off-roading.

    Don’t confuse conventional CVT’s with eCVT’s.
    Two totally different animals.

The conversation I had with him was initially the effect of my truck not having the external atf cooler on the life of the transmission while towing. The sum of his response was don’t worry about it.

Does my 2011 Subaru Outback have a CVT?
It has lots of miles and ZERO problems but of course, I don't tow anything with it. And it's fast/powerful. And it gets great mileage.

My Tacoma has been great regarding reliability but, it's only been 3 years. Powerful? Great mileage? :anonymous:
