Today I changed out my engine oil or at least I thought I did. Working quickly and under some time constraints for work I drained off my transmission fluid instead of my engine oil. I drove it around the block to get the oil warm and immediately noticed my truck was having a tough time going from stop to 1st gear. When I stopped the pressed the gas it increased the RPMs on the engine then jumped into first with high RPMs causing me to burn out. I took it back to my garage, realized what I had done and repaired it the next day. But today I'm noticing a much more minor case of the vehicle jumping from stop to 1st gear. Any suggestions before I go all in and have to fork out major dough for a tranny inspection and overhaul.

    Thanks,

    J

drain the tranny fluid again, change the tranny filter, refill the tranny with fluid, drive up and down your street slowly shifting from gear to gear, return to your house, repeat process until truck shifts and drives better, basically you need to flush the tranny system.

    Wow...that sucks.

Why did you attempt to warm the oil after it was drained?

    April fools?

Gmann1972 thanks for the info I will go ahead and try that all the other gears transition fine without any issues.
Joe D- No April fools here lol trust me I wish it was. I wanted to warm it after because that's what I watched on youtube and it was my first go around on this.

You should stop using youtube for guidance, driving a vehicle with the engine oil drained is not a smart idea. Some people should stick to autoshops for vehicle maintenance

So you drained your tranny fluid thinking it was your oil. I assume you added 5+ quarts of oil to the already full oil pan. Then drove around the block unknowingly? JJ

    I'm not sure I understood.

So you drained the oil, then drove around the block to warm the oil (Which is already drained; therefore, you were planning to drive around without oil?)

Anyways, you can try flushing out the tranny like others suggested. Also, if you thought you drained the oil and refilled the truck with more oil, it is way over filled. Overfilling on the oil by 5 quarts is really bad.

I drained the transmission fluid rather than the engine oil. Then I added some engine oil and drove around the block to warm the oil and see where It would be on the dipstick once it warmed up a bit. Once I took it around the block I began noticing a shifting issue from stop to 1st gear only. The other gears shift fine. I also filled the transmission fluid back up immediately.

This has gotta be a last ditch effort at April fools...there's no way...

...if it's real, I'm sorry. You gotta understand my skepticism.

So you had 10 or 11 quarts of oil in the engine and nothing in the transmission? If so, lets hope it was a very short distance so that damage was kept to the minimum.

Put an ad on Craigslist immediately. Explain that your brother is being held for ransom in Mexico and you need to sell your truck quick for all the cash you can get. Make offer please.

the engine oil was low already so we are looking at roughly 9 Qts

    Honest recommendation...

Take it to a mechanic you trust...have it towed there...flush the transmission and change oil. Change all filters.

    Pray...

It all depends on how far and hard you drove it. None of us will be able to tell you otherwise without doing that first and determining if there is actually a difference after that..

Well don't drive on 9 quarts of oil! Drain 4 quarts or so to ensure that you have the correct amount of oil in your truck.
