I have been reading a ton of info here on wheels and tires and there is some excellent resources, but in all my reading I haven’t seen the question I would ask. I am not interested the tallest (biggest) tire I can fit without clearance issues and/or what lift do I need achieve required clearance….

I am on a quest for new moccasins for a stock road going 2022 TRD Sport premium Dbl Cab 4x4 - what is the widest/low profile all terrain light truck tire I can run without clearance issues on a 17x9 wheel that just barely pokes or is flush with oem flares.

I could find a 275/60r17 like a toyo proxes but since I am old, I like white lettering. When I add that requirement, I end up with stock tire size on wider wheels:

17x9 with about -12 offset (SSW wheels)
265/65r17 BFG Trail Terrain or Michelin LTX m/s

    Have I missed something obvious?
I would very much appreciate seeing pictures of similar wheel/tire setups.
    Thank you

If you went with a different offset you could go with a 285/65R17 Yokohama Geolander AT G015. That's the same height (give or take) of a 265/70R17 which fits stock height trucks. You could also look at 275/65R17 BFG KO2 or the same Yoko G015. Mudflaps will most likely have to come off.

Probably not many pics give the rare fitment. But it's worth checking Custom Offsets gallery. They have lots of pics.

(If you want lo-pro, run a street tire.)

LOL - still need a tough tire (lots of gravel roads) and to be able to tow. I consider low-pro AT to be 60-55 series, under 55 series are 'bandaids' and while cool looking not what I am looking for for this application. Off roading for me is done on 2 wheels. :) Cheers

I was hoping you'd jump - thank you for doing so. I just jumped onto your site - I didn't know you had machined wheels - the M71 wheel in a machined finish is beautiful! What offset would you recommend if trying to swing the 285/65r17 on 17x9 with a stock suspension? Note - I couldn't find the 285/65r17 on the yoko site only a 285/70r17 which is a big 33" tire. Ideally I would like to find a 285/60 or 285/55 in an LT tire which should yield about a 30" dia but so far I haven't found a r17 tire in that size and I am trying not to increase wheel dia. Cheers and thank you for sharing your experience/expertise with me.

Our machined wheels are out of stock but we are powder coating at no extra charge. I have some samples coming back this week. One is a bright metallic silver. Or we could brush a set and hit it with powder clear. I'm hoping to have more machined wheels stocked soon though.

17x8.5 +00 would be better than a 17x9 -12 for what you're looking to do.

Here is that Yoko. Maybe it's a Tire Rack exclusive? Or it's discontinued and they're the only ones that have stock? 31.5" tall

@lundy Thank you for this info - weird on the tire availability as I was on the Yoko main website... I am in no hurry, just trying to have a wheel/tire plan ready to execute when I am ready. I have a strong preference for wider wheels with a lip - would you feel the need to talk me out of 17x9 wheel if I stayed at a 265/65 or 275/60 tire size to improve clearance ? :)

For a deeper lip 17x9 is a better option. My 8.5 is only 2.5" deep but the 9 is closer 3.75. But it's also -25 so I'd recommend a shorter tire for sure.

These ones weren't cleared but here is the depth.

@lundy oh my, those are exceptional looking. My total unfamiliarity with Tacomas leads me to ask if -25 wheel will cause issues with a stock/smaller tire size (30.6"dia or less) - I sure hope it would/can work :) Do you have a Canadian distributor ?

just my ignorance but also may be because i am bilingual..

when you say new moccasins, you just saying new rims? because moccasins are shoes and the wheels and tires are the shoes of a car?

Reason why i ask is.. i did extensive search for moccasins wheels and moccasins tires and nothing is coming up

Great question - it is a word use of my own making and totally outside normal english use of the word moccasin :) I have not refined my thinking/creative use of the word to the point of limiting moccasin to refer to only the tire vs wheel and tire combo. My apologies for the confusion. Cheers

I have 285/75/16 on a 2022 sr access cab. With a -22 off set and they rub like a mofo in reverse

@lundy for reference as to my wheel/tire preferences - this is my previous truck (I downsized...) LT305/55 on 20x10 Predator 8. It took alot of money to properly swing that combo on a 99 GMC k2500 - I am older and trying to be wiser as I choose wheels/tires for this new to me Tacoma :)

Thanks for this - based on my reading to date I would have expected that 33" tire to cause some challenges - this info helps me calibrate things. Cheers

@Chilledspode we should have a Canadian distributor by the time we get the next batch.

    @2022tacoma those 285's are 1.25" taller than a 285/65R17.

OP It's tough to say if it would work for sure. If you wanted to be more cautious, the 265/65R17 might be the best for peace of mind...

@2022tacoma do you have aftermarket/adjustable UCA's? Sometimes getting the caster closer to positive 3.5-4.5 degrees will kick the wheels forward and get them away from the cab mount.

Might just go to a different shop for alignment and see what they can do
