I have a new to me 1996 Tacoma 4x4 automatic and I have a question about the OD indicator. I see on the wiring skematic where there is a bulb in the instrument housing but it does not illuminate during the bulb check portion of the key on / crank when starting... The users manual does not make any reference to this bulb so for you gen 1 guys, does your OD indicator light illuminate when you turn the OD on or off while driving... kind of a pain to take the dash out for nothing if I dont have to.

I have an 01 and I get an "OD OFF" light in the dash when I turn off OD. Next time I start my truck I'll check if it lights during startup... never bothered to notice.

 

The OD light as far as I know does not illuminate when the cluster does the self check when starting the truck. I could be wrong but that's what I remember. It only turns off/on when you interact with the OD button.
