Things have surely changed over the years. When I went back to School as an adult in 2000 to study IT they told us then that many employers are still going to be conservative. That we should be cautious about tattoos and piercings. the recommendation was no tattoos that a short sleeve shirt can't mostly cover, no face tattoos, no multiple or large ear or nose rings. Now much of that and more is accepted many places.

I tend to bend dress code rules and wear jeans more often than I'm probably allowed. however I never wear anything ripped or worn through. I know it's the fashion to buy them like that, but i'm ole school we had to wear them in to get 'em that way. I couldn't have brought home anything like that growing up even if I paid for it with my own $$ and not get a lecture over it. We are normally expected to wear something like Khaki pants, sneakers or casual shoes and a polo shirt at work. I often do that or Jeans and a button down shirt and western boots. no one says jack to me.

At a previous job (20 years ago, for perspective) there was "casual Fridays". One of the people in "executive row" never dressed casual and still wore suit/tie. Seems his "casual" was older jeans, white T-shirt and biker jacket. He knew that that sent the wrong message regardless, especially as an "executive".

one rule of work is to dress for the position you want to have.
One former boss used to always ask me if I was going to a job interview if I dressed up a bit more than required.... I'd say I don't know... yours maybe lol

I’ve had this exact experience as well. Tech didn’t want to spend the time to process the billing and records in their system since it was, I don’t know, Thursday? Once the computer communicates with the state and spits out a ‘pass’ they’re free to do what they want.
