How do you check for this??

 

If the engine is running OK now, you were very fortunate indeed. The reason the engine quit and the reason you got the misfire CEL is because you did suck up water through the elbow opening.

It doesn't take much to hydro-lock a cylinder. Next time you might not be so lucky.

That is really doubtful. For an engine to suck enough water to cause issues the air intake would have to be completely submerged. Which isnt possible in 8" of water. You have to think of an air intake like a straw in Coke. If there is a hole in the straw you will only suck air. If that hole is fixed or the hole also gets submerged then you will suck the liquid.
If a splash of water could stop an engine mine would quit every time I drove in the rain with my deck plate open.

I would say it was water spashed in the alt, or possibly some water down the spark plug tubes.
