I know it's a little OT but since 90% of us A/V electronics guys use soldering irons I figured it would be a good group to poll.

My old station gave up the ghost and isn't worth repairing anymore so I'm in the market for something a little more portable this time.

While a lot of my soldering is done at a bench, I do wish I could be more portable at times to do soldering in the vehicle (or boat, or trailer, whatever) so I'm considering a portable option. I'm currently torn between a trusty butane iron or one of the new 12/24v digital irons (TS100 variant) running from a battery or jump pack.

The butane irons are cheap and have a good selection of tips included and are quick to refill but are guess work when setting temperature. The digital irons are super fast to heat up and have precision temp control but require a battery pack of some sorts and most of the different tip sizes are extra and they're about 2-3x the price of butane.

Anyone have one style or the other and have a strong reason to pick one particular design?

I’ve had the Milwaukee M12 since it came out and I still love it.
I did stereos professionally so the money was worth it for me, as it saw multiple hours a day of use in my shop.
I also am pretty invested into the full M12 line so I have plenty of batteries and chargers. It can eat though the little 2ah battery pretty quick so I’d get a 4ah or 6ah to extend your run time, and they act as a base so you can stand it up.

I use a Hakko fx-888d when I can plug in and a Hakko FX901 when I can't. Both great irons. I also have a lot of M12 but still prefer the Hakko.

I just got a TS80P and there are claims online that it can run of a battery pack.

I ended up with the Ryobi One+ soldering station so I could run it off wall power or battery. I have a lot of One+ stuff so it slid right into the lineup.

It actually works very well. It's not quite as portable as the others as it's still wired to a base station, but I don't have to be near an outlet either so it's a compromise.
