Looking for advice. I brought my 2019 Tacoma into the Toyota dealer for the standard 20,000 mile check up. After leaving the shop, I drove about a half a mile and was slowing down for a light when I realized I didn’t have any brakes. I nearly plowed into the car ahead of me and was seconds away from driving off the road into a tree to stop my momentum. Luckily, the brakes kicked in with some forceful and frantic pumping. I turned around and headed back to the Toyota dealer and as I was pulling into the service garage my wheel locked up. Turns out, they did not tighten my left front wheel and as a result, I nearly crashed. Thank God I didn’t get onto the interstate which I was only a half mile from. Because the wheel was not tightened, I broke one of the wheel studs. They are going to replace it but I am wondering what possible long-term damage there might be to the truck. I don’t want issues down the road. What questions should I be asking the dealer? Any other advice would be appreciated.

Can someone smarter than me explain how loose lugs can lead to brake failure?

Both things are terrifyingly bad, I just can't figure out the causal relationship.

Rotor dislodged and pads did not grab effectively.

And that somehow prevented the other three brakes from working? I don't buy it.

How would the rotor dislodge? The hub and rotor should still be intact right up until the wheel goes flying off, wouldn't it?

The wheel didn’t fall off so the rotor only had a very small margin of movement. I agree cazysccrmd.

Maybe the wheel canted over and severed a brake line?

Could the rotor have shifted and the got binded up in the caliper causing the wheel to lock up?

I'd make sure the brakes are perfect and the alignment is as it was before they messed up your truck. Don't put out a dime for anything and make sure they get you a free rental if they need to keep the truck.

This is what I don’t get, per the OP was slowing down and lost brakes almost hitting a car and tree, but then drove it back to the dealer??

Didn’t say that, but it’s pretty stupid to drive a vehicle back to the dealer with no brakes per OP. Ever heard of calling the dealer back and getting it towed on there dime. Could have done more damage or worse killed someone.
