Don’t you have to use a dongle for wireless? I don’t think that was built in yet.. does it also happen wired?

For what it's worth, 2nd gen didn't even have an option for Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. I spent $600 for my aftermarket Pioneer unit only for it to randomly crash on me using CarPlay, and then the whole unit died, and then I bought another, and the brand new one does the same thing. Apple has known issues with CarPlay and for the life of me I don't know why they don't fix it. Fairly sure Android Auto is not immune to those same type of problems. I'm 99% convinced it has something to do with Waze, Spotify, or the combination of both because that's when mine always crashes.

 

3rd gen Frontier is wireless

Because Apple is a cancerous company that refuses to make a functioning product.

 

I’ve had zero issues in my tundra with wired CarPlay to a 2020 headunit retrofit

the kenwood unit I put in my Tacoma would crash randomly… could be 5 minutes to 2 months. Still no idea what its problem is.

 

Mine have been functioning well for many years. I've used all makes and models of phones in 20 years as an IT person, they are all the same, they are all just tools.

But Apple also doesn't hand over my data to the FBI. Just sayin.

Well, the day my iPod touch stops deleting the music app to make room for space even though it has 5 gigs of empty space on it... Maybe that's the day I'll accept that apple are somewhat competent.

An iPod has one job. To play music. I don't need a stock app. I don't need a health app. I don't need a Pinterest app. I don't need 15 other bloatware apps that are on there that can't be deleted... But it will auto delete the music app to make space for more files even though I intentionally left it with 5 gigs of unused space. Absolutely trashy programming.

Yes, Spotify is missing tons of music, and the stuff they have is chopped up and cut up for radio edits. So many great tracks by artists. Have the endings cut off or have the live banter cut between the front and the audience. Screw them too. They also don't pay the artist. If I buy one discounted album at $7.99, that puts more money in the pockets of that artist and recording agency than 10 years on Spotify will of me listening.

 

Regarding the privacy thing it was not just a PR stunt. A US federal judge ordered them to create backdoors for spying and Apple told them to F off and won. If you follow their track record, they are actually very good in terms of privacy and security versus the rest of the field. Lots of articles on sites like EFF who look to protect us little people. Not all sunshine and roses, and Apple is still a big huge company with unlimitied monies which makes them inherently evil, but much better than the Google side of things.

Regarding your iPod: Most Android phones also come with bloatware. Heck, most come preinstalled with Facebook which is spyware. You can always root/jailbreak your iPod or Android and get rid of that crap. You can probably get old school non-touch iPod models on eBay that have zero apps for pennies on the dollar because nobody wants them any more. Or go buy an old Zune. Buy a newer iPhone that supports the latest iOS and then you can delete those apps because they allow it now. I agree streaming isn't a perfect solution and I don't advocate for it. I only use streaming for convenience because I'm too lazy to load MP3s any more.

Back to my original argument: All of these things are tools. You choose the right tool for the job. If it isn't the right tool, pick another. I won't fanboy over any of them, but I will point out unfair hate based on brand alone because that's just silly tribalistic gibberish. Hmm, that may be a good band name...
