Are you disappointed in me for a trading in my Tacoma to get a 4Runner?

Right. But there are automatics that will shift when you tell them to. These transmissions just aren't designed that way.

Sequential shift or race transmissions are designed that way, but I've never heard of a regular civilian automatic being designed that way

However, the latest Blackhawk tune from Yotawerx does act this way if you turn on ECT mode and then shift to S mode.

Hmmm. I've always thought that transmissions with a manual mode would just shift when you tell it to, regardless of RPM. The exception being that it would not downshift if you try to select a gear that would over-rev the engine. Otherwise, what's the point?

This has come up on the 4Runner forum, because people expect it to behave like a sports car with a manual mode, while the S mode is only designed to limit the top gear the transmission will go into and help with engine braking.

I guess the only way to confirm is to go test drive something with that type of transmission and intentionally short shift it. :notsure:

Manufacturers trying to cya on transmission repairs is my guess.

Buddy's sho Taurus had paddle shifters ... Still behaved like a sissy.

I just ran it by some friends and they confirmed that manual mode up-shifts on demand on vehicles they own, or have owned.

One says his Dodge Charger does, and another on a Lexus (IS, I think). The guy with the Lexus says he could throw it in 6th from a dead stop if he wanted. But, more to the point, they up-shifted when you told them to.

They will also up-shift on their own if you redline them, and obviously they won't let you downshift if you select a gear that will over-rev the engine.

That's what I had thought. Which is why our S mode is different, because it only limits the top gear.

My Mini Cooper shifted on demand as well, as long as it was inside the parameters, to keep from grenading the engine.

Calling BS on the Lexus guy. Unless he's a master tech and knows de way

(Also not hating, it's just.... That's not how Lexus/Toyota programming is. Unless he has an LFA, in which case.... :hattip: )

Well, he's a pretty mechanical guy. One of his other cars is a 9 second LS swapped Nissan 240SX. And, it's stick.

Still, I can't confirm either way having never driven one myself. Oh, wait, I did test drive an IS300 years ago when I was an asshole and went to dealerships to test drive cars for fun. And, I drove an AWD IS350 in like 2016. Still, I never attempted to short shift one in manual mode.

But, the main point is that there's a difference between cars with an actual manual shift mode VS the S mode in the Taco or 4Runner.

I don’t remember if I could do it from a stop in my 250 but it would pretty much do whatever you told it to. Also the programming was pretty great so I didn’t run in it manual mode much other than to play around a few times

You should get one of those trucks that come with an extra pedal. They are pretty cool and do exactly what you tell them to

    Good call!

IIRC, those fancy new 4th gens come with that 3 pedal option. Between that, and a turbo 4, it's probably pretty much just like driving a Miata! I mean, like a really big Miata that doesn't corner for shit.

My time at AVF last winter.
S mode was useful in 4L so you could limit top gear.
Also the engine breaking, like you mentioned.
I should give a shout out to @Stoney Ranger for that tip.

Definitely. I use it all the time just to keep the RPM's up on trails. L4,S1 is great for steep descents, and steep climbs. Even in 4hi, or rwd I'm usually in S2 or S3 if I'm going slow.
