I never realized that there is a pen holder on the inside lid of the center console. No more rifling through the glove box. ✏

 

Isn't that the holder for tailgate key? Sir, using it for a pen is abuse and will void your warranty. These trucks are not built for such owner negligence.

 

I used it for a pen on my 16 for 5+ years

I have push button start. My door key slides into the FOBIK .

 

The key in the fob should work on your tailgate. I think only the 16’s had a separate key.
Edit: 16’s are not the only year with a separate key.

 

I keep a Fisher space pen in that holder because most pens don’t like being inside a hot truck for too long. Even works when it’s freezing out.

 

That is what I am seeing surfing TW. Looks like my tumblers are seized. Not surprising due to where I live. I'll try to free the lock cylinder up.

So I guess it is a pen holder for me inside the console lid. Yippee

C'mon people! Anyone here who says that clip in the top of the center console arm rest, is for the tailgate key, has got to NOT be thinking! I mean, the key is built into the key fob for those who have keyless entry. It is there for two reasons, in case your battery in the FOB wears to the point where it needs replacement and no longer signals your presence near the entry door, THEN, you simply take the key out of the FOB and use it to get INTO your truck. NOW, if you keep it in the lid of the arm rest, HOW are you going to get into the truck? And for those who have KEYS to get into the vehicle, start it, etc, I mean, are you REALLY going to keep a spare key inside the vehicle, making it easier for someone to steal your truck? The debate has been discussed here on Tacomaworld many times, as to what that clip thing is for, and although the key might fit there, I can't imagine anyone putting a spare key right there in the truck! And for those like myself, who have keyless ignition, again, if you are locked out of the truck, WHAT are you going to use to get INTO the truck, if your key is out of the FOB and clipped inside the lid of the arm rest? People that keep a spare key inside their truck, are probably the same people who put a key under the mat that is outside the front door of their house, in case they forget their house key! I normally don't jump, but man, in this case, just THINK a little, people!

 

I work for Toyota. In our training papers, it said it is to be used for the tailgate key.

 

I put a pen in there the first day of ownership.

Yea, mine does too. It’s just a lot easier than pulling the key out of the fob.
