Ok, here is the deal on my '18 PRO. I just located my "extra" key which I knew works in my door and asumed in my tailgate. It does. If you look at the pics attached you will see a different cut on each side of the key. One for door and one for tailgate. You have to be sure to insert the key in the correct direction for it to turn.

My lock cylinder isn't seize after all.

You can use it for a pen as long as you drive in a straight line on dry pavement. No turning.

The spare key is supposed to go above the sun visor. Haven't you seen any movies?

The proper use of that bracket on the console lid is a subject that comes up periodically, and is always an occasion for levity.

It is definitely NOT for a tailgate key. The damn thing simply doesn't fit in the bracket. I don't care what "training materials" say.

The problem is that the bracket is not mentioned in the Tacoma user's manual. But it IS mentioned in the Tundra user's manual, and the Tundra bracket is identical to the Tacoma one. The answer is clear: it's a pen holder. But not for just any pen. It's for a pen with a .325" barrel diameter, such as a Bic Soft Feel.

The small key that fits inside the key fob is not the one they’re talking about. They’re talking about the separate large tailgate key that you should have gotten along with two fobs - which each contain the small keys.

I use it for a pen myself even though it’s not designed for one. Even when I had my tundra. But I’ve yet to find a pen that fits correctly. It’s designed for the long tailgate key, as has been said a hundred times.

Only 2016 and some earlier 2017 model trucks had a separate key for the tailgate.

I have a separate key for my 2018 push button start. The FOBIK Key only unlocks the door

Have PTS also. The little key that is in the fob unlocks the door from the outside and the tailgate. But I recall certain older models had the little fob key for the doors and a separate key just for the tailgate. My friends PTS 2016 is like this, with a separate key just for the tailgate.

After 2017 the little key in the fob is also the same key for the tailgate.

If you check out post #22 you will see the extra key has two different cut sides. My FOBIK key has only one cut side for the door. I don't know why Toyota doesn't cut the other side for the tailgate. ???

You are so wrong. It's specifically designed for a pen, and the Tundra user's manual says so. My Bic pen (Soft Feel model) fits in the bracket perfectly.

The bracket is entirely the wrong shape to hold a key. Maybe a key can be forced in there, but that's not what the bracket was designed for.

The people that are contending that it's for a tailgate key should post pictures, so we can all see how it (doesn't) fit. If they do so, I'll post pictures that show that my pen fits perfectly. I mean, the bracket even makes allowance for the pocket clip.

I'm really confused regarding this now.
My little key in the fob opens the driver's door and the tailgate with the same single cut key. My friends 2016, the little key can only open the driver's door, and he received a separate old style key just meant for the tailgate. My dealer said it was unique to 2016 and early 2017, going forward you just need the little key in the fob to open/lock everything, so they don't give those spare old style keys, just two masterkeys.

Have you known dealers to be willing to negotiate and include a pen when purchasing the truck? Makes sense that they should... why would they sell a truck with an empty pen holder? They include gas in the gas tank, air in the tires... they ought to include a pen in the pen holder.
