I wouldn't want the truck, but since you will probably end up stuck with it I would get towing insurance and probably not drive very far from home the first year.

They don't promise to make every single vehicle perfect. They provide a warranty to assure you they will make it right if it's not perfect off the line.

I vote Take the new head, and Go for the extended warranty.

When have you ever heard someone say, "I had my cylinder head replaced, and my truck has never been the same since?" A new head sounds like a complete (maybe even overkill) solution.

In addition, after 200 miles, you have some data about whether the truck has any other issues. Why would you want to start over with a new vehicle?

I would be upset if it were my truck too but Toyota will certainly stand behind it if they do the repair and the chances of further issues down the road are next to zero. Both the heads were off mine 25k miles ago and it's perfect.

Oddly enough a coworker was asking me about a 2015 TRD pro or TX pro (can't remember which) that his brother was looking at semi-locally at a dealer in Massachusetts. Like 900 miles on it, 8 grand off sticker price. Carfax shows one cylinder head replaced at around 150 miles. Perhaps they had a bad batch of valves and built a bunch of trucks like this?

Have you ever replaced a head or head gasket on a car? I've thrown junk yard heads(after having them checked) on cars and never had a problem.

Changing out the entire head is probably over kill as they could replace only the bad valve.

I wonder how many people on this website actually work on their own vehicles instead of being an Internet mechanic

Pretty much every defect that customers identify and have repaired under warranty, and all those that Toyota identifies as TSB or recall issues, are the result of a design or manufacturing flaw. Those flaws all existed when we bought our trucks. The fact that your first issue surfaced after 200 miles instead of 20,000 miles isn't really relevant.

I can understand how they found it via a leak down test as with the valve too long it wouldn't seal properly when closed.

How they came up with the 1/32 inch number... I think they pulled that out of their ass.

OP. They only owe you a repair / replacement at no charge, Accept it and move on.

You don't have to be "That Guy". Unless maybe you are That Guy. Hmmm [IMG]

If that is the minimum you will accept, not sure what advice you want. Sounds like your mind is made up. Let us know how that works out with your dealer.

Assuming it's a 4L that's 31 thousands they are shimmed valves it should have run for Sh%^ right out the factory door. Sounds fishy to me.

Your first sentence seems accurate compared to how it was described to me.

Sorry. No BS. 50 miles into driving it, the check engine light came on simultaneously with the "Trac Off" light. The code was one the delear service dept. had not seen before, thus they contacted Toyota Tech. for assistance.

OP. A head replacement performed as a unit is an easy and fast fix for this issue. They should be able to complete this in one day.

IMO they are not going to give you a truck replacement for this simple repair. Regardless of what you demand or tell them you are not going to accept anything less.

You will catch more flies with honey...

A defective valve does not warrant 4200 lbs. of replacement truck. It will be a minor inconvenience while your new truck is in the shop, but you will probably get a free extended warranty. First world problems...

With out the valve in their hand it would be impossible to measure the length. Just what was the code? P0623 valve too long?

OP, is the truck now at the dealer's shop? Did they say when it will be fixed?
